Description:
The Department of Religious Studies at Brown University invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral research associate. We seek an interdisciplinary scholar of visual or material cultures with expertise in any of the religious traditions of broader China pre-1800. The ideal candidate will bridge the study of religion and art history through exciting course offerings and participation in intellectual events on campus. Candidates are expected to have an advanced degree in Religious Studies, Art History, or a related discipline.
The selection committee conceives of the study of "China" broadly, stretching from the Silk Road to maritime communities. Candidates whose work and interests are transnational are also encouraged to apply. Similarly, "religious traditions" is broadly conceived, and may be Buddhist, Daoist, Confucian, and/or popular traditions. We welcome candidates specializing in established subfields, such as Dunhuang Studies, as well as in emerging subfields.
The recipient will teach three courses over the two years at Brown, with the possibility of cross-listing these courses in History of Art and Architecture and/or other cognate departments. In addition, there will be opportunities to organize academic events in collaboration with the department.
Brown University seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, viewpoints, and ways of knowing and learning.
Qualifications
Recipients must have a Ph.D. in hand by July 1, 2025, and must not hold a tenured position. Early career scholars in tenure-stream positions who will not be under tenure review during the fellowship period are warmly invited to apply. Individuals who are currently - or have previously been - postdoctoral fellows or postdoctoral research associates in other programs at Brown are not eligible.
The fellow will be employed as a postdoctoral research associate with a salary based on experience, standard benefits, and a $5000 per year reimbursable research fund. Scholars from outside the United States are appointed under a J-1 visas (exchange visitor status) only.
