Postdoctoral Research Associate
About the Opportunity
Northeastern University is looking for a postdoctoral researcher for an NSF-funded project (https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2125326&HistoricalAwards=false). The project aims to (1) develop data-driven approaches to link human mobility and respiratory hazards measured by air quality monitors; (2) design real-time AI technologies to connect information and communities; and (3) deploy network-based interventions in two local communities (i.e., Roxbury, Boston, MA and St. John Parish, LA) burdened by air pollution. The central question of the project is how to develop tools to assist individuals with assessing their exposure risks with the goal of enabling individuals to identify behavior changes that may reduce exposures to certain air pollutants.
The responsibilities of the postdoctoral researcher are:
- Performing research on quantifying, predicting, and analyzing human mobility data and the geosocial networks from these data sets;
- Collaborating with the PIs and a small team of UG/MS students to deploy smartphone apps and sensor systems in local communities (Massachusetts and Louisiana) to collect human mobility data, measure air quality at high temporal and variable spatial resolution both in the homes of participants and along their daily trajectories (i.e., sensor packages carried with participants).
- Developing mathematical and/or statistical models to address bias and uncertainty in different data sets;
- Working with the broader project team (including epidemiologists and communication experts) to integrate the project into community efforts in an equitable, relevant, and thoughtful manner and to analyze resulting data within the context of related participant surveys and external information (e.g., locations of certain types of industrial facilities);
- Working with the PIs to conduct outreach to and research tasks with participating communities
- Working with the PIs to implement related K-12 outreach activities;
- Presenting research results at conferences and seminars; and
- Co-authoring research articles for publication in leading peer-reviewing journals and top conferences.
Qualifications:
- Candidate must have experience in computer coding and be willing to learn new data analytics skills as necessary for the project.
- Candidate should be interested in sensor systems and have some experience interacting with sensors of some type (e.g., assembling mechanical systems, downloading data, etc.)
- Candidate must be able to work well on a team and with individuals from a wide range of personal and professional backgrounds in various types of contexts.
- Candidate must be highly organized, have good attention to detail, and be able to set and meet deadlines. Candidate should be able to independently manage work flows related to aspects of this project.
- Candidate has completed or near completion of PhD in a related field.
Other info:
- The research fellowship is for 1 year and renewable for 2 more years (depending on starting date).
- Applications will be considered on a rolling basis with preference for January 2022 starting time.
- This position will be based on the Northeastern campus in Boston, MA with some travel to other field sites possible
