Open Date: Aug 13, 2024
Deadline: Nov 15, 2024 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

Description
The Williams College Department of German & Russian invites applications for a one-year non- renewable position as Visiting Assistant Professor of German for the academic year 2025-2026. Research and teaching interests might include, but are not limited to: 21st-century literature and culture, film and media studies, minoritized voices in the German-speaking world, digital humanities, eco-criticism, visual culture, and sound studies. The successful candidate will join a vibrant program that is committed to the professional development of its pre-tenure and visiting colleagues. In addition, Williams College is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community. We strongly encourage candidates from underrepresented identities and those who can contribute to the diversification and enrichment of ideas and perspectives in both the humanities in general and German Studies in particular to apply.

The teaching load is 2:2 and teaching will involve a combination of language courses and culture courses; the latter may be in either German or English, depending on the needs of the department.

Qualifications
Excellence in language teaching is a prerequisite, as is a genuine interest in undergraduate education in the liberal arts. ABD is required and a PhD is desirable.

Application Instructions
Consideration of applications will begin on December 1, 2024; preliminary interviews will be conducted via Zoom in mid-January 2025 and an on-campus interview will be scheduled for mid-February 2025.

For initial application, please submit a cover letter, a CV, and three letters of recommendation. Other materials may be requested at a later stage in the review process. The Williams College Department of German and Russian is especially interested in candidates who can help convey to students the rapidly changing social, political, and demographic reality of the German-speaking world as well as the academic community in the United States through their research, teaching, and mentoring. Applicants should note specific knowledge, experience, and abilities related to building a diverse educational environment in their cover letter.

All materials (cover letter, a C.V., and 3 letters of recommendation) should be addressed to Gail M Newman, Chair, Department of German & Russian, and must be submitted through Interfolio. Applications submitted by email will not be accepted. Questions should be directed to gnewman@williams.edu. All offers of employment are contingent upon completion of a background check (further information available at http://dean-faculty.williams.edu/prospective-faculty/background-check-policy/).
