The Department of Music at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Composition (Commercial Music). We seek a creative, dynamic composer with significant professional experience in media scoring (e.g., film, television, online media, video games) and or/ popular songwriting.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage in creative and professional activities, including building industry partnerships, producing new work for commercial applications, and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations within the school and university.
  • Teach courses and lessons in music composition, specifically focusing on songwriting and/or scoring for film, television, video games, and online media platforms.
  • Assess current curriculum offerings and develop a new commercial music program. 
  • Serve as the administrative leader of the commercial music program, which will include reviewing and revising curricula in media scoring and music production.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Engage in service activities within the Department of Music, the university, and the music composition community at large.
  • Participate in committees, student advising, and other departmental responsibilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience in Media Scoring, Music Technology, Music Composition, or a related field.
  • Significant professional experience in songwriting or scoring music for media (film, television, online media, or video games).
  • Fluency in digital audio workstations, notation software, sound libraries, studio recording, and other relevant technologies.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and create a dynamic educational environment for diverse students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience at the college/university level.
  • Professional experience with audio post-production (editing, mixing, mastering).
