Job Description Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Institutional Research, the Senior Business & Research Analyst is responsible for leading and maintaining the business intelligence operations for the Research, Assessment, and Effectiveness Office. Manage the design, and development, and maintenance of data warehouses and data models. Use the College’s enterprise business intelligence tools, SQL, SPSS, STATA, the Microsoft software suite, as well as other appropriate tools to carry out these functions. Work closely with college stakeholders to understand complex business and informational needs and translate those needs into reports, and analyses.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Master’s degree in social science, computer technology, management information systems, or a related field.
  • Three years of full-time equated experience in data analysis of large data sets, preferably longitudinal data sets.
  • Two years of experience in higher education preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining data warehouses and models.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Reporting
  • Supports the preparation, compliance, and submission of institutional reporting mandated by the Federal Government, Maryland Higher Education Commission ( MHEC ) and other accrediting agencies, and associated organizations.
  • Design, develop, and test complex reports, extracts, and interpretations of data utilizing the college’s business intelligence system.
  • Validate variable logic with the college’s reporting data system.
  • Create and maintain data models that simplify reporting and support front-end BI reporting tools.
  • Design and publish data visualization and interactive dashboards.
  • Create, organize, and manage data warehouse documentation.
  • Manage the overall architecture, design and development of the data warehouse.
  • Support, design, implement, and modify data modeling processes as required to support data warehouse.
  • Coordinate with development teams and other subject matter experts to determine data modeling and transform process requirements.
  • Identify and implement processes and technical solutions related to data integrity issues between various integrated systems.
  • Train college faculty and staff on the use of the business intelligence system.
  • Oversees large-scale data collection projects.
  • Designs and implements longitudinal research in collaboration with stakeholders.

Leadership
  • Serve as a secondary point of contact regarding the college’s data and reporting.
  • Serve as a representative to provide input on the college’s data and reporting system on applicable cross-area internal committees and external affinity group committees.
  • Coordinates with staff working jointly on projects in the areas of data collection, reporting and tracking methodology.

Other
  • Responsible for complying with all required college mandated training within the prescribed timelines.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of how to create, query, and maintain large data sets using a relational database system.
  • Knowledge of statistical software and its use to manipulate data (e.g., recoding, flattening longitudinal data, producing charts and tables).
  • Ability to understand complex business processes and the inter-relatedness of data across an organization.
  • Competence in query language and working with complex data warehouses and data models. Experience in data collection, integration, processing and analysis.
  • Knowledge of data management, systems, and architecture including Extract/Transform/Load ( ETL ) methodologies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge coding and reporting in SQL .
  • Experience with enterprise reporting systems, preferably Business Objects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and participating in group meetings.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability and willingness to provide training, guidance, and mentorship to colleagues.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to coordinate group work in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to design data visualizations.
Job Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other
employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally
defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical
capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but
not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant
climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting,
grasping, and repetitive motions.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
  • As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
  • A background investigation will be conducted prior to the offer of employment. A signed authorization for the release of personal information will be required if selected for an interview.
