Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of environmental change, health and well-being to join dynamic activities across CIRES as well as partner institutes, departments, centers and programs across CU Boulder. While Assistant Professor is the anticipated hiring rank, the Associate Professor rank may be considered based on experience and qualifications. The new faculty member will play a key role in the CIRES and CU Boulder communities – while advancing their own extramurally-funded research agenda – to address matters related to environmental change, health and well-being. Competitive applicants will be those who draw from interdisciplinary and integrative approaches (based in quantitative and/or qualitative social sciences) who examine how natural, physical and social influences (e.g. fires, floods, vulnerability) affect physical/mental health and anxiety, with sensitivity to behavior change, health equity, and a range of solutions. Topics may include how people with varied demographics respond to climate change, environmental changes, hazards and extremes (e.g. models, warnings, forecasting), and considerations of environmental justice and health equity (e.g. historically marginalized and minoritized communities that have experiences disproportionate impact on wellness linked with structural and system inequalities [race, income, geography, etc.]). Examples of training and skills that will be viewed favorably may include data-intensive research, experimental research, research and/or practitioner evaluation, participatory action research and/or community engaged scholarship. This tenure-track faculty member will help advance and strengthen CU Boulder capabilities in areas of environment change, climate change, health and wellness.

The position is rostered in CIRES, with tenure and teaching responsibilities in a relevant academic department including, but not limited to, Environmental Studies (ENVS), Geography (GEOG), or Sociology (SOCY). Teaching needs will be aligned with those of the home department (based on the candidate's specific expertise).

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active, externally funded research program, supervise and mentor graduate students, teach at the professional-student level and undergraduate- and graduate-student levels, and contribute professional service both within the university and to their professional research community. The typical effort distribution for tenure-track faculty is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service.

CIRES has identified environment and health with training in the social sciences as a key priority for the institute going forward. This hire will advance work in CIRES to both understand our environment and expand our comprehension of how environmental change and perceptions affect people (and vice versa). The new faculty will interact with other members of the CIRES community and across the CU Boulder campus to help carry us beyond the fundamentals of environmental research and communication to explicitly understanding the connections between the environment, human health, and well-being.

What We Can Offer
  • This open-rank, tenure-track faculty position will be filled at the assistant or beginning associate professor level. Rank is determined by years of experience and accomplishments.
  • Associate Professor: The salary range for this full-time, 9-month position is $100,000 - $115,000 annually.
  • Assistant Professor: The salary range for this full-time, 9-month position is $90,000 - $100,000 annually.
  • This position will have the option to take summer salary from grants or other funds. Funds are available for the research space, office space, moving allowance, and includes competitive startup funds. It is anticipated that the space needs for this position will be centered on office space needs.
  • A relocation stipend is available within CIRES and tenure home guidelines.

What We Require

Minimum academic requirements include a PhD at the time of appointment in environmental studies, geography, sociology, psychology or a related field such as behavioral science, data science, information science, and/or health science with a demonstrated research record that engages with environmental science as well as a commitment to open science practices. The candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to greater diversity and inclusion.
