The Department of Applied Physical Sciences (APS) invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level. This position is one part of an ongoing multi-year plan to grow the Department of Applied Physical Sciences. The position is in the broadly defined area of materials science and engineering. Particular themes of interest include, but are not limited to, energy production and storage, and membrane and water purification technologies. We welcome applicants with an experimental and/or computational background. The goal of APS is to bridge fundamental and applied research to address society's most challenging problems in the physical sciences and life sciences while also seeking to expand diversity in those who practice science and engineering. To achieve these goals, APS partners with all STEM and Health Affairs departments to establish team-based research, education, and entrepreneurship. This hiring initiative continues a strategy to build a department that values interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to solve urgent societal challenges.
A PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or a related field is required. Candidates should have a commitment to research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and extramural funding. Duties include research, teaching, and service. Excellence in and commitment to education and mentoring at the graduate and undergraduate levels are essential qualities. The Department is broadly committed to equity and inclusion. It is part of our departmental mission to teach and engage a diverse community of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty. We especially welcome applications from candidates who are committed to advancing these ideals and who align with our department values.
Applications will only be accepted online (https://unc.peopleadmin.com/postings/289599). Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, and a statement on teaching and mentorship. Each reference provider will be automatically contacted to upload their letter of support. Applications will be reviewed beginning November 1, 2024.
