Position Summary: Washburn University's Department of History invites applications for an Assistant Professor of World History to begin August 1, 2025. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position. A completed doctorate is necessary for tenure-track appointment.
Each selected candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to pursuing teaching excellence at Washburn University, including a dedication to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage students from all backgrounds. The Department of History offers bachelor programs in both History and History/Education (training history teachers for secondary schools). Our survey courses in both World and U.S. history and selected upper-level courses serve our General Education program as well as our majors. Washburn University promotes small class sizes, and the History Department follows that practice by keeping course size small even in surveys.

Essential Functions:
• Fulfill teaching expectations associated with tenure-track appointment. Teach 12 hours per semester (either in person or online, according to departmental needs) or equivalent full workload as outlined in the faculty handbook. Typically this will entail three survey classes and one upper-level offering.
• Teach and develop undergraduate classes and seminars as assigned and as dependent upon department needs, which will include the full range of World History (Ancient, Changing, and Modern World) and upper-level courses in the candidate’s area(s) of specialization.
• Fulfill service expectations associated with tenure-track appointment by engaging in service activities in the department, university, and profession.
• Fulfill scholarship expectations associated with a tenure-track appointment.
• Performs additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.
Required Qualifications:
• Doctoral degree in History. ABD applicants will be considered, with completion of the doctorate by August 1, 2026.
• Specialization is open but should not overlap with existing faculty areas (thus excluding specializations in European, Latin American, and U. S. history).
• Demonstrated dedication to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage students from all backgrounds.
• Official transcript(s) are required upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior experience teaching World History.
• Prior experience teaching in the candidate’s area of specialization.
