The University of Maryland, Baltimore’s Intercultural Leadership and Engagement unit within the Division of Student Affairs has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Director of Intercultural Leadership & Engagement.
The Assistant Director will utilize a social justice framework to develop and coordinate programming, experiences, and resources that enhance students’ professional practice, leadership, and skill development. The individual in this position will develop and manage innovative co-curricular educational programs, trainings, and services that facilitate student and student organization leadership development, intercultural engagement, interprofessional learning, and community building for all UMB students. By collaborating with colleagues from across the Division of Student Affairs, the University, and the Baltimore City community, the individual in this position will develop opportunities and build partnerships to meet unit goals and address barriers to student success.
The Assistant Director will develop and manage comprehensive initiatives that foster intercultural student engagement and leadership opportunities to sustain a thriving educational environment for all students, including from historically underrepresented communities (i.e., Students of Color, students with disabilities, first-generation college students, students from different socioeconomic backgrounds, undocumented students, LGBTQ+ students, veterans, religiously diverse students, students who are parents, and other student identity groups). The individual in this position will utilize a social justice framework to develop and coordinate intercultural programming, experiences, and resources that enhance students’ professional practice, leadership, and skill development, while prioritizing the cultivation of a sense of belonging. By collaborating with colleagues from across the Division of Student Affairs, the University, and the Baltimore City community, the individual in this position will develop opportunities and build partnerships to meet the Intercultural Leadership and Engagement unit goals and address barriers to student success.
Intercultural Leadership and Engagement (ILE), a unit within the Division of Student Affairs, was created in June 2020 to aid the University in advancing student success and the development of cultural competencies to inform professional practice. We aim to provide academic and social support to historically underrepresented populations while enhancing skills for intercultural development and intergroup dialogue.

Primary Duties
- Assist in the planning and implementation of professional development programming and opportunities for identity, intercultural, and advocacy education for students, faculty, staff, and the campus community to aid in improving the climate for diversity through trainings, workshops, seminars, consultations, curriculum development, and resources. Assist in the planning and implementation of professional development programming and opportunities that promote student leadership and civic and community engagement by creating and engaging in collaborative partnerships with colleagues to offer multiple paths for community and student engagement.
- Assist in the strategic direction of the creation and management of a leadership programming model and intercultural development online opportunities for students via in-person, virtually synchronous and asynchronous, and hybrid environments. Assist with budget management and resource allocation of program funds.
- Manage, plan, and maintain a robust co-curricular leadership development program via the President’s Student Leadership Institute and the Learning Institute. Collaborate with various ILE liaisons, campus partners, and stakeholders to manage comprehensive programs and services.
- Foster and support the advancement of the Intercultural Leadership and Engagement (ILE) Center and the Division of Student Affairs. Serve as a primary liaison for the ILE to advance and support student diversity, equity, inclusion, and advocacy.
- Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to provide comprehensive programs and services.
- Provide academic, personal, social, and cultural support to students through consultations and referrals to internal and external support services.
- Provide administrative support in the selection of the annual topic for the President’s Symposium and White Paper Project. Coordinate the recruitment and selection of the President’s Fellows, provide support to faculty advisor(s), and assist the President’s Fellows as they examine best practices, craft recommendations.
- Coordinate and plan University-wide student engagement and community building initiatives, such as the University Open House, the Student Leadership Reception, new student orientation, and fall kick-off/welcome programming.
- Assist in the conceptualization, development, and implementation of projects that includes training materials, website content, communications, progress reports, promotional materials, recommendations, and other resources related to identity, culture, advocacy, and student support.
- Research, support, and implement policies and procedures specific to student organizations. Provide policy and procedural interpretation and guidance to students, staff, and faculty.
- Maintain knowledge of trends and best practices in student affairs, identity development, student support, intercultural development, and technology.
- Assist in the development, execution, and administration of an evaluation plan including data collection, analysis, interpretation, reporting, and the utilization of results to improve the quality of programs.
- Conduct community outreach and respond to the changing needs of students belonging to of underrepresented and diverse student groups. May assist in responding to student concerns and students in crisis and create services to support impacted students.
- May supervise, develop, and evaluate student, para-professional and/or professional staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor’ s degree in a related field. Master’s degree in Education Administration or in a related field is preferred.
Experience: Three (3) years of related experience with one (1) year of experience with identity, intercultural, and advocacy programs and/or leadership, engagement, or program development of students. Progressive experience working with students preferred.
Supervisory Experience: One (1) year of experience in work coordination, training, or direct supervision. Experience in direct management or student leadership role preferred.
Other: Clery act designated job as campus security authorities (CSA) member and will comply with Clery Act requirements.

Hiring Salary: $68,000 - $76,000, commensurate with education and experience.
