Job Summary/Basic Function
The Department of English at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position (#123170) at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The start date for the position is August 1, 2025.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in teaching and a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and evidence of an active research agenda in rhetoric and writing studies.
Key Responsibilities:
A terminal degree in English, rhetoric and composition, technical communication, technical writing, or a closely related field is required by the appointment date.
Other Desirables
Applicants with any of the following will receive special consideration: specialization in studying and teaching the rhetoric of health and medicine, disability rhetoric, grant writing, environmental rhetoric, UI/UX, or the rhetorical traditions and writing practices of under-represented communities; and demonstrated experience teaching in a variety of modalities (e.g., face-to-face, HyFlex, online asynchronous).

- Teach advanced undergraduate courses in rhetorics and writing studies, such as cultural rhetorics, community writing, digital writing, and technical and professional writing in the Department of English and the interdisciplinary Public Writing and Rhetoric program.
- Develop new advanced undergraduate courses in the candidate's area(s) of expertise ( e.g., disability rhetorics, Latinx rhetorics, environmental rhetorics and science writing, rhetorics of gender, rhetorics of race, rhetorics of health and medicine, political rhetorics, indigenous rhetorics, religious rhetorics, visual rhetorics).
- Teach general education courses, including first-year writing and introductory to technical writing.
- Teach graduate-level courses in the Department of English's MA and PhD programs.
- Take a leadership role in expanding the university’s rhetoric and writing curriculum.
- Maintain an active research agenda within rhetoric and writing studies.
