Lecturer in in Biology and Biochemistry

Bowdoin College

Posting Number: F00256JP
Department: Biology

Position Summary: Bowdoin College's Department of Biology and Program in Biochemistry invite applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible lecturer-track faculty appointment at the rank of Lecturer beginning July 1, 2025. Initial appointment to this ongoing teaching position is for three years, with recurring multi-year appointments and the possibility of eventual promotion to senior lecturer contingent on successful review and reappointment. The position subfield is open. The teaching load is four courses per year. Courses will include a rotation of intermediate-level offerings in cell biology, biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, microbiology, and developmental biology, with weekly lab sections co-instructed by professional laboratory instructors. The successful candidate also will teach an annual non-lab biochemistry course, contribute to introductory-level instruction in Biology, and offer advanced courses in their area of specialization where opportunity and demand allow. A PhD in Biochemistry, Biology, or a related field is expected by date of appointment. Prior experience leading undergraduate course instruction is strongly preferred. This position complements two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Cell Biology and Biochemistry advertised separately.

Bowdoin requires its faculty to have a strong commitment to inclusive excellence in their teaching. At Bowdoin, inclusive excellence is an ongoing collective practice that honors our institutional commitment to provide an outstanding liberal arts education and serve the common good. We practice inclusive excellence when we build capacity to engage with and learn from differences, leverage resources to disrupt inequities, and foster belonging so that all members of our community can thrive.

We especially encourage people from historically excluded groups to apply. Accessibility during the application and interview stages, as well as once employed, is a priority of the College: https://www.bowdoin.edu/accessibility/index.html. Finally, visa sponsorships for faculty hires are available.

Bowdoin College offers opportunities for professional development, including a path to promotion to senior lecturer and eligibility for fully-funded, one-semester senior lecturer sabbatical leaves. Support for teaching, curricular development, grant-writing, digital initiatives, computing software, professional conference travel, and community partnerships in courses is readily available to all faculty. The College also offers robust programming and resources for establishing and enhancing mentoring networks.

Bowdoin College accepts only electronic submissions. Please submit: 1) a cover letter; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a statement that describes your teaching philosophy and how your teaching, scholarship, and mentorship supports our commitment to equity and inclusion; and 4) the names and contact information for three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation. Letters will be automatically requested from the references of candidates invited for interviews.

Review of applications will begin October 25, 2024, and continue until the position is filled.

Company

Bowdoin College

Bowdoin (rhymes with explodin') is a private, selective, liberal arts college, founded and endowed to benefit the common good. Our historic residential campus, located in Brunswick, Maine, is home to just over 1,800 students from all over the world.

Academic life at Bowdoin spans thirty-three departments, and is cooperative, not competitive: so we tend to attract students who like brainstorming with faculty, working in teams, and welcoming big, new, difficult questions.

We value kindness, diversity, creativity, and hard work.

There’s a lot to love about Maine. And this state is very much at the heart of the College. We simply wouldn’t be Bowdoin anywhere else.

According to one of our colleagues, “To teach at Bowdoin is to help train and educate future leaders—an unalloyed privilege in my experience and a rare one.”

We feel fortunate to live here and to be able to experience everything there is to see and do. Maine is renowned for its beauty—its iconic seaside fishing villages and beachesmountain vistas, and pristine forests. But the appeal is also very much about the people—their culture, sense of community, way of life, and welcoming, inquisitive, and energized spirit.

We’re not going to try to list all that Maine has to offer. But we will try to lead you in a few directions from which you can navigate your own journey of discovery—a very Maine thing to do too!
