POSITION: The College of Health and Human Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is searching for candidates to serve as the Director of Teacher Education, Chair of the Department of Education for Equity & Justice, and Chair of the Department of Special Education & Inclusive Practices.  The Director of Teacher Education is responsible for providing leadership and management for all aspects of teacher education at UW-Eau Claire.  In addition, this position will serve as chair of both the Education for Equity & Justice department and the Special Education & Inclusive Practices department.  This position is a three-year limited appointment as director/chair with a concurrent tenured faculty appointment. Continuation of the director/chair role will be reviewed for renewal after three years. This position reports to the Dean. Position begins January 27, 2024, or later.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution and a background in teacher education, or equivalent
  • Documentation of achievements as a teacher and scholar warranting tenure at the rank of associate or full professor within the University
  • Ability to provide strong and effective leadership
  • Experience facilitating assessment practices and accreditation procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain relationships with campus teacher education units and departments, with internal and external constituents, and with groups or individuals within local, state, or national organizations
  • Ability to foster and sustain a positive, supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with students, faculty, and staff, including a willingness and ability to listen to divergent points of view and to mediate and manage conflict
  • Knowledge and support of organizational processes and shared governance
  • Analytic abilities for interpreting complex policies
  • Ability to attend to details effectively and expediently, while simultaneously maintaining the vision in which the details reside
  • Ability to problem solve independently and collectively
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and oral/written communication skills

DUTIES:

  • Lead the development and articulation of a collective vision for teacher education
  • Anticipate, plan, establish, and assess teacher education goals and initiatives
  • Serve as UW—Eau Claire’s liaison to DPI
  • Serve as the resource person for the university on all DPI program requirements and mandates, communicate DPI requirements to faculty and staff and assure that all requirements are met
  • Create new and nurture existing partnerships with area schools, agencies, community organizations, and other stakeholders
  • Represent teacher education and collaborate with other education leaders in the state and in national teacher education organizations
  • Establish a positive, supportive, and productive environment for faculty, staff, and students
  • Foster collegiality and collaboration within and between departments, units, and colleges
  • Serve on the CHHS Dean’s Leadership Team.
  • Teach courses or supervise in the teacher education program as necessary
  • Serve as the lead administrator for DPI-based accreditation and assessment activities and continuous improvement initiatives for teacher education.
  • Supervise all faculty and staff in the Education for Equity & Justice and Special Education & Inclusive Practices departments as well as teacher education personnel not housed in departments.
  • Oversee all staff and all personnel procedures and actions including recruitment, annual performance evaluation, salary, reappointment, promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review processes in coordination with the DPC, as appropriate
  • Oversee department budgets, faculty travel, and equipment inventories for teacher education, the Education for Equity & Justice, and Special Education & Inclusive Practices departments.
  • Determine teaching assignments and class scheduling for the Education for Equity & Justice and Special Education & Inclusive Practices departments.
  • Facilitate student support issues including prospective student recruiting
  • Oversee administration, assessment, and evaluation of all department programs and curriculum
  • Facilitate immersion trips and high impact practices
  • Oversee faculty travel, vacation, and use of sick leave
  • Maintain departmental outreach activities to both alumni and community members including advisory boards
  • Maintain equipment inventory and facilities assigned to teacher education
  • Coordinate the Mogensen Lecture Series and other teacher education initiatives funded through foundation accounts.
  • Oversee teacher education scholarship awards.
  • Prepare and submit reports as requested by DPI, the Dean, Provost, or Chancellor.
  • Advise the Dean on issues related to teacher education.

DEPARTMENT: Teacher Education programs at UW-Eau Claire prepare future educators to work with students with a wide range of abilities and diverse backgrounds. We offer programs in elementary/middle education, special education, and secondary education. Through scaffolded courses and multiple K-12 classroom placements, future educators learn the knowledge and skills necessary to serve students. Future educators interact with experienced instructors and expert cooperating teachers across grade levels and school contexts.
