About the Job
The School of Music in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor. We are particularly interested in music scholars who have active creative practices and whose work will broaden our existing expertise in those popular musics whose roots are found in marginalized communities. While we are open to expertise in a variety of musical traditions, we especially invite applications from those with expertise in the musical traditions that have thrived in our nearby communities, including (but not limited to) Black, Latinx, East and Southeast Asian, East and West African, and the music of Indigenous peoples. Scholars whose work investigates music’s transnational and transethnic flows are particularly encouraged to apply.
As with all faculty searches in the School of Music, we seek a collaborative and creative colleague to help us build the future of music studies in higher education. We seek candidates poised to develop international reputations through scholarly publications or other forms of published work, and who have experience and practical skills in the creation, production, and/or performance of the music in their area of study. Candidates eager to lead undergraduate liberal education courses, graduate seminars, and performance-based courses are particularly encouraged to apply, as are those qualified to mentor students interested in combining aspects of scholarship and musical creation. The successful candidate will be invited to join a remarkable group of faculty in a state and city with strong commitments to secondary musical education, a region with vibrant Somali, African American, Indigenous, Hmong, and Latinx communities, and a School eager to challenge structures of racism and colonialism.
This appointment will be made at the rank of assistant professor and is a 100%-time position over the nine-month academic year (late August to late May) beginning with the fall semester of 2025 (8/25/2025).
Responsibilities:
- Proactively recruit and maintain an outstanding, nationally competitive cohort of students interested in interdisciplinary music studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels who come from a range of backgrounds.
- Develop and teach academic and creative courses (potentially including ensembles) in the area of expertise.
- Maintain an active scholarly career that deepens and expands our understanding of our musical worlds.
- Advise undergraduate and graduate students on career goals.
- Provide service through participation in faculty governance.
- Contribute to community and civic engagement activities that strengthen the School of Music’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Required Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology, Musicology, Music Theory, Creative Practice/Critical Inquiry, Cultural Studies, Anthropology, or a related field in hand at the start of the appointment. Candidates without the doctoral degree, but with at least one graduate degree and equivalent professional experience, will also be considered.
- An established or emerging record as a scholar and teacher able to prepare students to navigate the contemporary academic and musical landscape.
- Evidence or promise of innovative teaching in liberal education, graduate seminars, and performance-based courses.
- Interest in graduate advising.
- Strong verbal, written, and digital communication skills.
- Experience with current and emerging technologies and applications (mixing, sound synthesis, beatmaking, analysis, etc.).
- An expertise in community engagement/civic practice.
