Job Description:

Advises and counsels students concerning employment opportunities and careers. Encourages employers to recruit campus graduates. Conducts individual and group sessions to inform students of services, policies, and procedures; and to provide assistance in resume preparation and interviewing techniques. Serves as liaison between employers and students; administers and coordinates activities associated with the campus interview program. Coordinates production of job opportunities bulletin and refers students to prospective employers.

Responsibilities:

The primary purpose of the position is to provide personal, social, career, and academic counseling services to students. A corollary purpose is to develop the freshman-counseling component of the Center, to include a comprehensive freshman student retention program.

1. Provide general counseling and student development services to students on a daily basis, with a primary emphasis on freshmen, through individual or group sessions.

2. Maintain a monitoring and tracking system to assess freshman student success.

3. Assist Counseling Services in performing relevant research regarding student development and retention.

4. Design, develop and conduct workshops focusing on enhancement of student developmental skills.

5. Collect, analyzes, and prepare reports on critical counseling and retention data.

6. Schedule and conduct an interview program with incoming freshmen students.

7. Maintains regular attendance and closely follows office reporting policies and procedures. The counselor must be flexible in terms of working after normal workday on occasions when the job tasks require.

Minimum Qualifications:

A master's degree in counseling theory or closely related field from an accredited college/university required. A Doctorate preferred.

Experience:

A minimum of three (3) years of experience in counseling.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

· Thorough knowledge of counseling theory and practice, planning, organization and academic counseling skills. Crisis intervention, problem solving, and multicultural counseling skills, plus a minimum of three years of counseling experience, preferably in a college/university environment.

· Evidence of working with minorities and special populations.

· Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and others concerned with student success.

· Strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills.

· Expertise in a wide variety of computer applications, especially student information systems.

· License-eligible or current Maryland Counselor or Psychologist licensure, preferred

· Membership in ACA, APA, or other appropriate professional organization preferred.

· Unpaid overtime (both planned and unplanned} may be required.

· Some travel to meetings and conferences may be required.
