Description

The School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU Carbondale) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Design, tenure track faculty position. This position is a full-time, nine-month tenure track position beginning in August 2025. Review of applications will begin November 18th, 2024. Priority will be given to applications submitted by the 18th, but applications may be accepted until the position is filled.

The ideal candidates will have a strong foundation in graphic design with a depth of knowledge in at least one area: app development, web design, AI, digital media, motion graphics, UX/UI, or branding/market strategy. The successful applicant will augment faculty expertise in the Undergraduate and Graduate Design curriculum, and the Design Research Studio. This position requires the ability to collaborate between graphic design, industrial design, art, and business.

The new faculty member will teach, advise, and mentor students at all levels of the Graphic Design BFA and MFA programs with options for teaching in other areas. The faculty member will play a significant role in building the design community, contributing to pedagogical innovation and curriculum development, supporting the growth and development of the design program, and participating in school, college, and/or university service. All faculty are expected to be actively involved in their design discipline and to produce creative research and/or work.

Examples of Duties

  1. Conduct ongoing peer-reviewed creative research as appropriate for a design faculty member at a Carnegie High Research Activity institution.
  2. Teach undergraduate and graduate level design courses and foundation courses. The standard teaching load for tenure-track faculty is two courses per semester.
  3. Provide service within a design team environment: by participating in course development, program planning, assisting in advising, and recruiting and retention activities.
  4. Participate in school, university, community, and professional service.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Primary consideration will be given to applicants with a terminal degree MFA, M.Des that required at least 60 semester hours, or Ph.D., in Design, Graphics Design, Visual Communication Design, Motion Design, Interaction Design, or a closely related discipline. Applicants who are still in graduate programs but have exceptional work and demonstrated abilities to succeed in peer-reviewed research outcomes are strongly encouraged to apply. Completion of the degree is required prior to the start of the appointment.

Portfolio, collate required materials outlined below as a single pdf document:
  • 15 images representing your work, capabilities, and experience,
  • 2 case studies of relevant work showing your design process,
  • and if applicable: 10 images representing work made by students under your advisement.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience developing future-related design approaches.
  • College level teaching above a graduate appointment.
  • Documented Design Research working with or focused on underrepresented/marginalized communities.
Supplemental Information

The Design program is housed in 24,000 sq/ft Pulliam Hall Design Wing that includes the Design Research Studio, a print lab, a fabrication lab consisting of 3D printers, a laser cutter, vinyl cutter, and other fabrication equipment, and a complete wood and metal shop. All classes are taught in wi-fi equipped classrooms supporting integration of hand and computer skills. The Design program currently has 40 students enrolled in its two specializations. The School of Art and Design (SoAD) has 15 T/TT faculty members, 12 NTT faculty members, approximately 180 undergraduate majors and graduate students and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). SoAD offers: a BFA degree in Art with specializations in Communication Design, Industrial Design, Art Education, and Studio Art with an emphasis in Ceramics, Drawing, Glass, Metalsmithing, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture; a BA degree in Art with specializations in Art Education, Art History, General Studio, Photography; a MFA degree with specializations in Design, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glass, and Metalsmithing; and a graduate certificate in Art History. The College of Arts and Media houses six schools: Architecture; Art and Design; Journalism; Media Arts; Music; Theater & Dance. The breadth of programs offered in the college provides a rich environment for interdisciplinary collaborative research.
