Job Summary

The Office of Fiscal Services offers a credit-earning internship opportunity that provides hands-on experience in various aspects of fiscal management. This internship offers the opportunity to apply academic knowledge to real-world scenarios, develop essential skills in financial analysis and reporting, and gain exposure to the day-to-day operations of a finance department. The role supports the core functions of multiple areas, including financial reporting, accounting operations, and budget. Additionally, the internship can be tailored to interns' area of focus, allowing them to delve deeper into specific areas such as financial analysis, audit support, or process improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Accounts Payable and Receivable:
a. Supports the processing of invoices, vendor payments, and customer invoices
b. Helps reconcile discrepancies and maintain accurate records of financial transactions

2. Budgeting and Forecasting:
a. Aids in the preparation and analysis of budgets and financial forecasts
b. Assists in monitoring budget variances and identifying potential areas for cost savings

3. Financial Reporting:
a. Contributes to the preparation of financial statements and reports for internal and external stakeholders
b. Assists with financial analysis and data interpretation to support decision-making.

4. General Accounting:
a. Assists with general ledger entries, account reconciliations, and journal entries. Help maintain organized financial records and documentation in compliance with regulatory requirements

5. Audits:
a. Supports the audit process by gathering documentation, performing audit tests, and addressing inquiries from auditors
b. Assists in implementing audit recommendations and process improvements.

6. Financial Analysis:
a. Conducts ad hoc financial analysis to support strategic initiatives and decision-making processes
b. Assists in evaluating the financial performance of projects, departments, or initiatives

7. Compliance and Regulation:
a. Stays updated on relevant financial regulations and compliance requirements
b. Assists in ensuring that fiscal operations adhere to applicable laws and regulations

8. Special Projects:
a. Participates in special projects as assigned by the fiscal services team or management
b. Contributes to process improvements, system enhancements, or other initiatives to optimize financial operations

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Currently pursuing a degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field that will align with a credit earning internship

Required Experience
On-the-job training provided

Basic understanding of financial concepts such as budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and accounting principles

Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), project management and presentation skills
Time management skills to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple responsibilities effectively
Effective problem-solving skills to address discrepancies, resolve issues, and propose solutions to improve processes
Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e. Microsoft Office suite)
Strong attention to detail and follow up skills
Strong customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette
