Posted: Oct 7, 2024
Apply By: Nov 29, 2024

Description

The Department of American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for an Advanced Assistant (tenure-track) or Associate (tenured) position in carceral studies, medical humanities, or environmental humanities/sustainability studies. We seek an interdisciplinary scholar with an historical sensibility and training/experience in ethnography, literary studies, and/or critical quantitative methods. We seek candidates interested in collaborative and public-facing work, and a deep engagement in the life of our vibrant department.

Duties include research, teaching, and service to the department, college, and university. Our department is seeking a colleague who can teach innovative courses, both broadly general and on specialized topics in American Studies. Responsibilities will include teaching large in-person courses such as “Main Currents of American Culture to 1865” or “Main Currents of American Culture since 1865,” which partially fulfill the state legislative requirement in US history. We welcome imaginative pedagogy that spurs student engagement and critical analysis.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD in American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Feminist Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Geography or related fields; provide evidence of excellent teaching; have an established publication record; and a record demonstrating ability to supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students at a large, public research university.

Application Instructions

The deadline for submission of applications is November 29, 2024.

Applicants should submit the following items via Interfolio: a cover letter with description of teaching and research interests; a CV; names and contact information for three references (reference letters will be requested at a later stage); evidence of teaching excellence (e.g., course syllabi, student evaluations); writing sample (approximately 25 pages).

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Position funding is subject to budget availability.
