Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking a Faculty - Assistant Professor-Respiratory Therapy.

Under the direction of the Respiratory Therapy Program Director and supervision of the department chair, provides instruction in clinical, lab, and didactic respiratory therapy courses, and plans and prepares approved courses of study with measurable objectives for each course. Teaching may include online, hybrid, face-to-face, and live-streaming modalities, along with the ability to apply these effectively in the classroom, laboratory, or clinical setting; faculty may be assigned to develop, articulate, and teach new courses as required. This position will assist the Respiratory Therapy Program Director with curriculum and program review, revision, and assessment, the development of new course materials and innovative instructional techniques that will improve student learning, writing accreditation reports (and self-study), and mentoring part-time faculty. Faculty are required to provide service to the department, college, university, and community, attend and actively participate in college events, department and division meetings, and college or Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) committees.

This faculty member will initially serve as the Director of Clinical Education.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Instruct, manage, and supervise individuals and groups in respiratory therapy theory and clinical courses in classrooms, labs, and the clinical setting, providing an engaged learning experience through a variety of teaching and learning strategies and modalities that may include online, face-to-face, hybrid, and live streaming. Prepares instructional materials (PowerPoint/livestream presentations, classroom demonstrations, visual aids, Canvas-based assignments, lesson plans, mockups, syllabi, etc.) Identifies learning materials such as texts, supplies, study guides, and equipment necessary for coursework. Documents and maintains accurate reports and records student accountability, attendance, performance, and follow-up.
  • Assists in evaluating and revising program admission criteria and promotion, curriculum and program review, revision, and assessment, student promotion and retention, and other program policies and procedures. Assists with recruitment, advisement, placement, and follow-up of students, developing new course materials and delivery techniques, writing accreditation and compliance reports, and mentoring part-time faculty. Coordinates cooperative work experience programs and students as assigned.
  • Provides service to the department, college, university, and community by serving on various committees as assigned. Attends and actively participates in college events, department and division meetings, and Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) committees. Participates/presents at state and national conferences, professional development activities, workshops, seminars, and industry meetings. Keeps current in new trends, developments, and techniques in the field by reading and utilizing material in journals and professional publications that survey and research healthcare facilities. Obtain and maintain licensure as required. Performs peer evaluation of department faculty.
  • Establishes and maintains office hours and advises students during this time and other times as needed and appropriate. Supports and embodies exceptional care, exceptional accountability, and exceptional results, as well as UVU's Mission. Performs other job duties as assigned.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution (by CoArc) with a bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy, and a master's degree in a related/similar field appropriate to discipline.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional experience teaching in a healthcare-related field.
  • Involvement in health professional organizations and/or organizations.
Licenses or Certifications
Current licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) in Utah.

  • Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques, curriculum development, and evaluation and assessment of instruction
  • Knowledge of current trends in respiratory therapy practice
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Skills in developing and presenting educational programs and/or work
  • Skills in the use of technology that supports student learning, especially related to online platforms such as Canvas
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking skills
  • Skills in public speaking and professional presentations
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents with diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to manage, motivate, engage, and evaluate students
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
