Bard College invites applications for the position of Community/Lab Technician for the Environmental and Urban Studies (EUS) program and the Environmental Studies Concentration (ES). The Community/Lab Technician will work to support EUS/ES faculty and students in teaching and research activities that utilize Bard’s Community Science Lab (CSL) to support on-the-ground community, environmental, and environmental justice efforts. We expect to provide training (scientific and/or community engagement oriented) to the successful candidate.
We are specifically looking for a team player who excels at working with a wide range of people who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. Interest in scientific approaches to environmental issues of water and air quality is crucial. Familiarity with nonprofit and academic institutions is a plus, particularly given the nature of this position and its focus on providing a solid bridge between communities and academia.

Compensation: $23-$25 per hour
This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Job Duties:
- Supporting faculty in incorporating regional community members and environmental justice efforts into classes and research
- Promoting the use of CSL instrumentation in courses and student and faculty research in collaboration with CSL staff
- Providing technical assistance with sampling and sensors, both in the lab and in the field
- Data processing, analysis, management, and reporting
- Providing logistical support for the maintenance of environmental monitoring equipment
- Mentoring of student interns
- Maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment
Qualifications
- Two or more years of closely related employment (or a Bachelor’s Degree in related field)
- Demonstrated ability to engage with community members involved in issue- and values-based social change work
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to write and speak to broad audiences
- Science background (in the field, in the lab, and/or in your personal interests)
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail Flexibility and the ability to multitask and meet deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- Community organizing and/or academic faculty support experience
- Previous experience working with environmental samples (i.e., water, air, soil)
- Experience in mentorship and/or supervision of interns
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- A valid driver’s license and comfort driving 12-passenger vans
Physical Demands
- Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and work in standard office and laboratory environments
- Must be able to work occasional weekends and evenings as needed, with compensatory time off
- Must be able to lift, on occasion, as needed, up to 20 lbs
