The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB)’s Student Affairs has an opportunity for a Senior Student Success Specialist (Specialist, Academic Success Senior). The Senior Student Success Specialist position is responsible for coordinating non-clinical health and wellness support, resources, and outreach on behalf of the Chief Student Affairs Officer/Vice President and in collaboration with the Student Affairs Deans and other stakeholders to students experiencing distress, an emergency, or challenges navigating the University. Foster the health, wellbeing, and success of students. Serve on the behavioral evaluation and threat assessment (BETA) and CARE teams for student reports, which includes i mplementing interventions that support student wellness and self-advocacy, monitoring and documenting student reports, s cheduling routine and emergency meetings, facilitating training experiences, sharing resources and referral services, and initiating appropriate follow up. Serve as a resource to the Student Counseling Center, Educational Support and Disability Services, the Student Affairs Deans, other University officials, and students to answer questions, share student health and wellness supports, and collaborate, as needed, on behalf of the Chief Student Affairs Officer/Vice President. Adhere to University policies, procedures, FERPA, ADA, and other applicable laws and guidance. Assist campus partners and students with interpreting and navigating school and university policies and procedures. Implement and make recommendations to projects, procedures, protocols, policies, and initiatives to support students. Serve on Student Affairs and University committees. Serve on the emergency on-call rotation with Student Affairs leadership.

Primary Duties

  • Provide direct and indirect assistance, leadership, and response on behalf of the Chief Student Affairs Officer/Vice President in collaboration with the Student Affairs Deans and other stakeholders to coordinate and support student success. Provide non-clinical outreach, triage, and follow-up with undergraduate and graduate students who are experiencing personal or financial distress, a familial or mental or physical health emergency, or challenges navigating the University.
  • Foster the health, wellbeing, and success of students. Serve on the behavioral evaluation and threat assessment (BETA) and Student CARE teams for student reports. Assist with coordinating the University’s response to critical incidents in collaboration with key campus and community stakeholders. Develop individual student success plans, meeting regularly with students. Implement interventions supporting student wellness and self-advocacy Monitor and document progress of students on caseload. Schedule routine and emergency meetings, gather and document relevant information, discuss reports, share resources and referral services, and initiate appropriate follow up. Serve as a resource to the Student Counseling Center, Educational Support and Disability Services, the Student Affairs Deans, other University officials, and students seeking assistance with academic issues, referrals to support services, and accommodations for students with disabilities. May collaborate with various stakeholders on behalf of the Chief Student Affairs Officer/Vice President.
  • Maintain partnerships with campus departments, tutoring services, and external organizations to provide a network and database to provide and improve academic and/or student support services and resources.
  • Assist campus partners and students with interpretation and navigation of school and university policies and procedures, including potential leave of absences, withdrawals, incomplete grades, and return to enrollment in the University after a brief or prolonged absence.
  • Promote, facilitate, and coordinate trainings and professional development opportunities in collaboration with stakeholders for behavioral evaluation and threat assessment (BETA) and Student CARE team members. Assist with training faculty and staff on support and referral of students in distress. Create and deliver presentations to students through classes, workshops, and student organization meetings. Monitor ongoing case, records, and/or management, information management, including student reporting, and record security and confidentiality. Track and perform data entry for student reporting. Enter student reports and updates into the University’s Hotline. Ensure validity and security of information, records, and confidentiality of student reporting and information. Adhere to University policies, procedures, and other applicable local, state, and federal laws and guidance.
  • Promote and implement projects, procedures, protocols, policies (e.g., BETA, minor’s policy), and initiatives (e.g., UMB Student Affairs student emergency fund, annual prescription drug misuse prevention training) related to supporting students in distress in collaboration with University partners. Serve as a resource and actively participate in Student Affairs and University committees. Advocate for data-informed change to policies, systems, procedures, and resources.
  • Serve on the emergency on-call rotation with student affairs leadership to provide support, response, and outreach services on behalf of the Chief Student Affairs Officer/Vice President of Student Affairs. May require occasional evening or weekend hours.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications :

Education: Bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, social work, counseling, higher education or related field. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Four (4) years of experience in academic support, student affairs, counseling, or a related field. Demonstrated experience collaborating effectively with diverse students, faculty, and staff within a higher education setting preferred.

Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

May require occasional evening or weekend hours.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of position requirements. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws, including FERPA and ADA. Knowledge of college student development theory and trends preferred. Knowledge of effective strategies, trends, and best practices in supporting the success of students through health and wellness initiatives. Effective administrative abilities, organizational skills, and understanding of technology and database management. Ability to effectively communicate thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently. Strong problem-solving, conflict resolution, crisis response, and interpersonal skills. Hiring Range: $59,000 - $65,000, commensurate with education and experience.
