Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is seeking a strong technology professional with enhanced skills in web development and maintenance and a keen eye for detail for the role of Web Specialist. This role plays a crucial role in advancing the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School's marketing and communications initiatives. Reporting to the Web Strategy and Analytics Manager, the Web Specialist is responsible for developing, deploying, and maintaining web technologies that support the school's strategic goals.

The ideal candidate will be a proactive, creative individual with the ability to independently manage web projects while collaborating with leaders of multiple teams to enhance the school's digital presence for prospective students, faculty and other audiences. The Web Specialist is responsible for quality controlling and executing all HTML updates for the externally-facing Carey web site, school intranet and the Carey blog. This role will administer web editor training and governance, and support ongoing web initiatives, such as Content Management System (CMS) template development, design, and accessibility governance.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Web Development & Maintenance: Design and maintain website pages, forms, calendars, and other web-based content within the school’s content management system (Drupal). Proactively audit content to ensure freshness and accuracy.
  • Stakeholder Consultation: Provide expert advice to school leaders and stakeholders on deploying web content effectively to meet project objectives.
  • Project Management: Coordinate with teams, and manage multiple web projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion.
  • Analytics & Reporting: Monitor and analyze web performance metrics, supporting the Web Strategy and Analytics Manager to improve outcomes and make data-driven recommendations.
  • Governance and Accessibility: Provide training and uphold governance standards. Understand and recommend ways to continually improve accessibility across Carey’s web presence.
  • Collaboration & Support: Work closely with peers and stakeholders to accomplish objectives, occasionally providing content update support, chatbot, and other digital tools.
  • Vendor Coordination: Oversee the work of contracted vendors or temporary employees as needed for project completion.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay up-to-date with digital marketing trends, best practices in UX/UI, SEO/SEM, ADA compliance, and web analytics to continually enhance the effectiveness of the school's website.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Digital Marketing Expertise: Proven experience in digital marketing, web analytics, and content creation, with a strong portfolio showcasing successful web projects.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to vary communication style depending on needs of stakeholders.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of CMS platforms (preferably Drupal), HTML, CSS, and UX/UI best practices.
  • Analytical Thinking: Experience in creating and analyzing web performance reports, with a focus on continual improvement and optimization.
  • Collaboration: Demonstrated success in working collaboratively across teams and with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Adaptability: Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities, manage stress, and handle unexpected interruptions.
  • Detail Orientation: Excellent attention to detail, including proofreading capability.
  • Commitment to Excellence: A strong work ethic with a commitment to quality, creativity, and innovation.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, fine arts, graphic design or other related field.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Three or more years professional experience in web development and maintenance using CMS.
  • Experience in web design and content creation.
  • Proficiency in web analytics tools.
  • Experience with Drupal CMS.
  • Strong communication skills and experience in higher education marketing or communications.
  • Working knowledge of SEO and strong command over web accessibility standards.
  • Working knowledge of JIRA, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and BrightEdge.
  • Experience with marketing automation tools and managing content in apps.

Starting Salary Range: $46,300 - $80,800 Annually ($69,740 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
