T he Film and Media Studies program at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts invites applications for a non-tenure track Instructional Assistant Professor position in the field of Digital/New Media Studies, starting in August 2025.
Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts seeks a film scholar and educator to enrich our faculty. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in one or more areas of digital media, including but not limited to social media analysis, games studies, virtual/augmented reality, transmedia, interactive media, and digital storytelling as a form of critical media analysis and cultural practice. The ideal candidate will bring professional experience, academic knowledge, and a passion for nurturing the next generation of filmmakers, film and media critics, and scholars. In addition to digital media courses, the successful candidate is expected to teach a full range of broadly-based courses in Film and Media Studies, as well as more advanced senior and graduate courses. A global perspective on digital media and its cultural, social, and political implications is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in film and media studies, with a special focus on digital media and emerging technologies. The teaching load is 24 credits per academic year.
- Teach introductory courses such as introductory courses such as introduction to film and media aesthetics, film and media history, and film and media theory.
- Incorporate a global perspective in teaching and research, examining how digital media practices vary across different cultural, political, and social contexts.
- Participate in program activities and contribute to curriculum development in both traditional film/media studies and digital media studies.
- Academic advising and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, and service to Dodge College and Chapman University.
Required
- PhD degree in Film and Media Studies, Digital Media or a related field by the time of appointment.
- Demonstrated expertise in digital media studies, with a focus on areas such as digital storytelling, social media analysis, games studies, virtual/augmented reality, or interactive media.
- Demonstrated ability to teach introductory-level courses in film and media aesthetics, history, and theory.
- Strong commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment.
- Evidence of effective teaching at the college or university level.

The salary range for this position is $100,000. Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience. This position is contingent on final budget approval.
