Description
The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) at Clemson University invites applications for an Associate Director of Research, with anticipated starting date of August 2025. This position is part of the SMSS strategy to support the university’s strategic goal of doubling research by 2035: https://www.clemson.edu/elevate/. This is a tenured faculty position, and it is expected that the appointment will be made at the level of Professor.
Expectations for this position include setting the SMSS research strategy, coordinating mentoring of faculty in scientific proposal development, liaising with funding agencies, identifying appropriate proposal calls and developing teams to respond, connecting SMSS faculty with collaborators within Clemson as well as nationally and internationaly, identifying opportunities for SMSS faculty to participate in large scale programs and collaborative/center grants. The Associate Director of Research will advise the school director on research matters and manage the business of SMSS research.
Candidates are expected to have qualifications commensurate with an appointment of Professor with tenure at a highly productive and successful school within an R1 research university, as well as a background that sufficiently prepares them for such a position. The ideal candidate will have experience in conducting interdisciplinary research, success in obtaining research funding from multiple external sources, a wide breadth of scientific knowledge, and a strong interest in mentoring our diverse and talented faculty.

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences is dedicated to
Clemson’s overall mission of discovery, learning, and engagement.
The School’s faculty includes tenured/tenure-track faculty,
postdoctoral fellows, and teaching-focused faculty, and it fosters
professional growth for all faculty. The School offers the full
range of Baccalaureate, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. The
School’s research productivity aligns with Clemson’s R1 research
designation, and the School faculty have been granted funding from
various federal agencies that totals about $3M in research
expenditures annually.
The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences is organized
into three Divisions:
• Mathematics: includes faculty in Pure and Applied Analysis,
Algebra and Discrete Mathematics, Computational Mathematics.
• Statistics and Operations Research: includes faculty in Applied
Statistics and Data Science, Operations Research, and Probability
and Mathematical Statistics.
• Mathematics and Statistics Education: includes faculty in
Mathematics Education and Statistics Education. Lecturers (of all
ranks) belong to the Mathematics and Statistics Education
division.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics or a closely related field and a strong record of impactful research (publications, funding support, etc.) that justifies appointment at the level of Professor.
