Essential Functions
As an integral member of the Criss Library management team, the Director of Access Services provides leadership, vision and strategic direction for the department, which includes the service desks and interlibrary loan. Reporting to the Dean, the Director leads a team that provides administration of circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, document delivery, stacks maintenance, and overseeing public spaces. This position helps administer the library’s integrated library system’s ( ILS ) circulation module, and oversees local administration of the interlibrary loan automation system. The Director works to promote the department and library services to campus student, faculty, and staff audiences. as well as fulfilling requirements of faculty status in areas of contributions to librarianship, scholarly activities, and service.
The anticipated start date is January 1, 2025, however, we can be flexible for the right candidate.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Administrative
- Oversees all Access Services functions; collaborates in the development, maintenance, communication, and implementation of policies and procedures.
- Performs statistical analysis and provides usage data and trends to library leadership, and conducts surveys and other assessments of user experience with the library facility.
- Facilitates projects,, mentors and trains staff and leads task forces and library committees as assigned.
- Oversees all Inter-library loan procedures and assists in reviewing software packages for applications that improve efficiency and support resource sharing.
- Oversees stacks maintenance; including re-shelving, inventory projects, processing of lost and missing books and media equipment.
- Oversees the service desk and daily tasks associated with the automated circulation system, is involved in controlling delinquencies, collecting and depositing fines, providing access to print and electronic reserves, and communicating with the Office of Student Affairs regarding student library debts.
- Assists with the library’s social media presence, library promotion, and collaboration with other campus entities and ensures Access Services information on the Library’s website is up-to-date.
- Represents the Library at relevant University of Nebraska Consortia of Libraries ( UNCL ) meetings.
- Maintains awareness of current trends in policy, practices, and technologies as they pertain to access services, inter-library loan, document delivery, user experience, and academic librarianship in general.
- Fosters an environment that encourages exploration, innovation and implementation of new approaches to teaching, learning, and scholarship in a rapidly-changing digital learning and work environment.
- Regularly staffs the service desks.
- Works to foster and grow existing partnerships within the university, as well as establish new partnerships, both internal and external to UNO .
- Provides leadership for space planning and works with Library staff and stakeholders to proactively plan for space changes in the Library.
- Contributes to the Library’s student-centered events and activities.
- Creates a climate that ensures an effective service-oriented philosophy; creates and maintains a work environment that supports staff development and growth.
- Maintains a working knowledge of the integrated library system (Alma Primo) with emphasis on the circulation module and patron database. Maintains a working knowledge of the library’s interlibrary lending and document delivery systems (ILLiad).
- Supervises Access Services full time staff and oversees student workers, including an Evening Circulation Supervisor and Interlibrary Loan Coordinator.
- Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates, and ensures regular training for employees.
- In coordination with Circulation Supervisors, trains and evaluates student employees on library policies, procedures, and duties.
- Determines staffing needs for student employees and full-time staff employees, and schedules accordingly.
- Assists ILL coordinator with developing, planning, and assessing ILL, Document Delivery, and PDA .
- Leads weekly staff meetings.
Subject Specialist:
- Collaborates with faculty in assigned subject areas to develop and communicate the availability of library resources and services.
- Evaluates and selects appropriate resources (monograph, serial, and electronic resources) for the assigned subject areas.
- Conducts ongoing review and de-selection of materials.
- May act as a coordinator between the library and database vendors in assigned subject areas.
- Provides general and in-depth research consultations in an appointment-based model for assigned subject areas.
- Provides general and specialized library instruction to undergraduate and graduate students in assigned subject areas, including both synchronous and asynchronous curriculum.
- Serves on library and university committees.
- Participates in cross-departmental projects within the library.
- Participates in professional activities, professional development and scholarly research and publication activities as outlined in the “Guidelines on Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure Recommendations for Faculty Members of the University Library”.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT : Twelve months, full-time, Academic-Administrative with faculty rank. Salary and rank are dependent upon qualifications.

Other Job Responsibilities:
- Occasionally works night and/or weekend hours.
- Participates in department, library, and university planning.
- Accepts and implements other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree from an ALA -accredited program.
- At least 2 years of management and supervisory experience in a library.
- Evidence of analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work collegially and to collaborate effectively with others, within and beyond the library.
- Evidence of administrative and leadership skills.
- Experience with integrated library management systems, ILL functions, and/or policies and procedures related to public service.
