Purpose of Position
Northern Kentucky University welcomes applicants to fill the position of Academic Advisor to advise undergraduate majors in the College of Business. This is a full-time staff position in the Business Center for Student Excellence. The Academic Advisor will provide academic advising, guidance and support to undergraduate students across 12 different disciplines. The Advisor will utilize holistic and proactive academic advising strategies towards goals of student retention, persistence, accomplishment, and success.
This advisor will be part of a team of faculty and staff dedicated to student success. Advisors are specifically expected to work closely with students to identify, implement, and support the best path to graduation, direct them to student resources, and help them make meaningful college decisions. We focus on building productive working relationships with students, alumni, faculty, staff, administrators from across the university.
Advisors are expected to have a firm grasp of the tools, systems, platforms and organizational structures that support student success; they must have a ready understanding of university policies and an awareness of and commitment to best practices in advising. Members of our team are advocates for the college and its mission. They are committed to the value of collaboration, student success, creative problem-solving, and professional development.
Primary Responsibilities
Advise majors and minors in the Haile College of Business including new students, current majors, transfer students, as well as potential students; Provide personal communication with undergraduates regarding academic advising issues; Assist students in developing a clear path to reach their educational and career goals. Deal with placement, transfer, graduation, and other degree-path issues and refer students to appropriate resources as needed;
Collaborate and participate in admissions, orientation, recruitment, and retention events within Academic Affairs and Student Affairs; Serve on appropriate committees (for example, Academic Advising Council); Assist the Center for Student Excellence with special initiatives and projects.
Become a Master Advisor which is an internal program to create a core of highly skilled advisors who provide high-quality academic advising to support new and continuing NKU students. Attend regular training classes, conferences, and educational events to stay current on NKU policies and best practices in academic advising.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required. A Master’s degree in business is strongly preferred.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and exceptional communication skills are required. The ability to work with diverse populations, strong teamwork skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks are also required.
Proficiency with office software (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); ability to learn complex software systems (e.g. SAP and Navigate) quickly. Ability to learn, understand, and articulate the requirements, culture, and skills developed in the Haile College of Business.
2 years of higher education experience is strongly preferred.
