Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's student body as an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Medical Humanities in the School of Interdisciplinary Programs and Community Engagement (SIPCE) beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year.
The successful applicant will be expected to lead and contribute to SIPCE's Medical Humanities Program, which offers a Bachelor of Arts in Medical and Health Humanities and a Minor in Medical Humanities through research, teaching, and service. The ideal candidate will also be able to contribute to one or more of SIPCE's other programs, including Environmental Studies, Food Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, or Mexican American Studies.
Preferred areas of expertise include but are not limited to: minoritized or marginalized communities; women's health; gender, sexuality, and health; environmental health; public health; bioethics; medicine, health, and politics; war, trauma, and health; and/or migration and health.

Department Background
The School of Interdisciplinary Programs and Community Engagement (SIPCE) houses several degree programs that include Public Affairs and Security Studies, Mexican American Studies, Environmental Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, Medical Humanities, Multidisciplinary Studies, Human Dimensions of Organizations, and Public Heritage and Community Engagement.Housed in the School of Interdisciplinary Programs and Community Engagement, the Medical Humanities Program offers students an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to develop an understanding of the cultural, economic, gender, and historical factors that influence health and healing. The Program focuses on understanding health, and the medical field, analyzing human behavior within a global and multi-lingual framework, and developing ethical intelligence.
Minimum Qualifications:
· A Ph.D. in Medical and/or Health Humanities· A PhD in the social sciences, liberal arts, or humanities with a clear focus in the medical and health humanities or a closely related field.
Beyond these qualifications:· Applicants at the rank of Assistant Professor must present evidence of active research and scholarship that includes (forthcoming) peer-reviewed publications; potential to effectively teach at the undergraduate graduate; and potential to obtain external grant funding. ABDs will be considered for the rank of Assistant Professor, but a conferred doctorate by August 31, 2025, is required for appointment.
· Applicants at the rank of Associate Professor must have a sustained record of high-quality research and scholarship evidenced by conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications; experience teaching and mentoring students effectively; success in obtaining external grant funding. To be appointed at the rank of associate professor in the program, candidates must meet the department and institutional requirements for tenure.
· Applicants at the rank of Professor must have scholarly professional experience demonstrated through an exemplary record of peer-reviewed publications, external funding, and a distinguished record of accomplishments that have led to a national reputation in the applicant's area of expertise. To be appointed at the rank of full professor in the program, candidates must meet the department and institutional requirements for tenure.

Preferred qualifications include:· Experience developing, leading, and assessing academic programs.· Experience working successfully in multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary environments evidenced by collaborative grant writing, research, and/or publishing, or through team-teaching practices or collaborative program development.· Ability to contribute to UTRGV's movement to become a bicultural, bilingual, and biliterate Hispanic Serving Institution.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
