About the Job
Position Overview
This position is for a Post-Doctoral Associate in the laboratory of Skeletal Muscle Plasticity and Regeneration Laboratory (SMPRL) in the School of Kinesiology, College of Education and Human Development (CHED). Our research within the SMPRL relates to the CHED research prorates of living longer and living better. The Post-Doctoral Associate will coordinate and conduct planned currently federally funded studies related to novel therapies to reverse the pathophysiology of traumatic injury, particularly at the level of the skeletal muscle. Current federal funding in across multiple agencies including NIH (R01), DoD, and industry partnerships. The candidate is expected to be highly motivated, creative, well-trained and interested in expanding their scientific skills related to skeletal muscle physiology. The candidate will be responsible for coordinating studies, and participate in and supervise data collection and analysis. He or she will be responsible for study administration, preparation and presentation of manuscripts, collaboration with other investigators’ studies, and laboratory management. The candidate should be comfortable working within an interdisciplinary group of personnel with different levels of experience (undergraduate students through senior faculty), and possess excellent oral and written communication skills. He or she will also have the opportunity to interact with various collaborators at UMN and external to the university. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and execute independent research plans leading to peer-reviewed publications, with strong motivation and initiative towards developing research independence via foundation and federal fellowships and grants, such as F32 or K99/R00. This position is based on campus. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager.
Job Responsibilities
Study Administration – 60%
• Design, conduct, and carry out original research projects in cooperation with the principal investigator and laboratory personnel
• Supervise the submission of applications of protocols to IACUC
• Supervise and participate in data collection
• Supervise the maintenance of databases pertinent to appropriate research studies
• Analyze and manage research data (reduction and statistical analysis)
• Supervise and/or carry out lab experiments
• Assist in the organization and direction of undergraduate and graduate students who participate in daily activities
Laboratory Management – 10%
• Assist with general direction of the laboratory
• Organize laboratory activities (meetings, journal clubs, etc.)
Preparation and Presentation of manuscripts – 15%
• Using data collected, prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals
• Assist in writing and submitting research findings for publication
• Assist in the writing of future grant applications
• Prepare and present data at national and international conferences
Collaboration with Other Investigators Studies – 15%
• Collaborate on reports, papers, and publications when appropriate
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Terminal degree (PhD/DVM/MD) in Physiology, Exercise Science or related discipline, with an emphasis in the area of skeletal muscle physiology, injury and/or regeneration at the time of appointment
- Previous work in the assessment of skeletal muscle function (e.g., using biopsied muscle fibers or in vivo analysis)
- Significant expertise in advanced fluorescent microscopy
- Previous work experience in biochemical analyses
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Previous first-author publications within the area of skeletal muscle or exercise physiology
- Previous record of publication and presentation of data at national and/or international meetings
- Ability to collaborate effectively with people from a variety of communities, backgrounds, and identities
- Experience in study design, analysis, and presentation of data to the scientific community
- Experience in mentoring laboratory personnel
- Experience with various immunohistochemically and gene expression analysis tools
- Background in statistical analysis
- Practical experience in data collection and experimental design
- Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with team members and project collaborators

Pay and Benefits
Pay Range: $61,008 - $67,000 ; depending on education/qualifications/experience
