Job Description

The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri (MU) is on a mission to educate and train outstanding clinicians and scientists from various backgrounds, generate new knowledge, engage stakeholders, and foster economic growth, all of which promote and protect the health and welfare of animals and people. Our Doctor of Veterinary Medicine professional program boasts a unique curricular structure, which provides nearly two years of hands-on training in the college’s general and specialty clinics. Additionally, the College is a leader in the training of Undergraduate, Masters, and PhD students in the areas of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Pathobiology. Simply put, our mission is to Teach, Heal, Discover, and Serve.

The Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery is dedicated to developing and disseminating knowledge to improve the health and well-being of animals and people through instruction, innovative research, service, and leadership. The department is home to the college’s Veterinary Health Center where our faculty provide clinical care, teach, and develop innovative treatments and therapies.

We seek applications for an open position as a Clinical Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor (NTT or TT) faculty position in Food Animal Veterinary Medicine . The University of Missouri has a broad-based food animal program that includes in-house clinical services, ambulatory / field service, and a production / regulatory / public health service. This position to open to candidates interested in any of these three areas of food animal medicine, with the distribution of time being dependent on the final candidate. The person filling this position will be expected to provide care of patients in the clinic and the field when assigned to emergency duty.

The successful candidate will contribute meaningfully to the missions of the Food Animal Section, Department, and College by:
  • Participating in the clinical curriculum and providing service to clients.
  • Interacting with the animal-owning public, referring veterinarians, students, commodity groups, extension faculty, animal science faculty, and the Missouri Department of Agriculture.
  • Sharing after-hours call with other faculty and house officers.
  • Participating in intern, resident, and graduate student training.
  • Participating in clinical/production- based research.
  • Individuals in the tenure track will be expected to develop a productive, funded research focus.
Didactic teaching, outreach, and administrative service will make up the remainder of the appointment. Distribution of effort will be based on the successful candidate’s qualifications, career goals, and the needs of the food animal section.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree (such as a VMD, BVSc).
  • Board Certification / Diplomate status or completion of a residency designed to meet the requirements for board certification prior to start date by one of the following organizations:
    • American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM – Large Animal)
    • American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP – Food Animal)
    • American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS – Large Animal)
Candidates will be evaluated on:
  • Relevant experience in an area of Food Animal Medicine.
  • Interest in practicing up-to-date medicine / surgery and a passion for teaching.
  • Eligibility for professional licensure (faculty or regular license) to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of Missouri (be able to obtain within 3 months of their start date).
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain DEA and BNDD registrations.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain Federal Accreditation by the USDA.
