Job Description
Fort Hays State University is seeking applicants for a Modern World Historian at the Assistant Professor rank. The position is a 9-month, non-tenure-track (NTT) appointment. The position may be converted to Tenure Track in the future pending administration approval. The department already has pre-existing strengths in United States history. The department is not seeking candidates in Latin American or Eastern European fields. Top priority will go to candidates with fields in Western Europe, Global History (Asia, Africa, etc.), Imperialism, and/or Digital Humanities. The successful candidate will provide evidence of teaching experience, or the potential to be a strong educator; evidence of service to the discipline, or potential to engage in service at the departmental, university, and community levels; and evidence of either scholarly achievement, or the potential for scholarly achievement. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability, or strong potential to teach on-campus as well as online courses. A preference will be given to someone who meets some areas of departmental need, which include, but are not limited to a specialization in global/world History with an outside field in European History, or digital humanities. This position must teach both campus and online history courses.
Minimum Qualifications :
- Ph.D. in History at time of appointment (August 2025)
- Ph.D. in an aspect of Global History
- Field in Western European Colonialism/Imperialism
- Field or experience in Digital Humanities;
- Experience teaching or strong potential to teach courses in:
- historical methodology and historiography;
- ability to teach survey level courses.
- Evidence of:
- teaching experience, or the potential to be a strong educator;
- service to the discipline, or potential to engage in service at the departmental, university, and community levels;
- either scholarly achievement, or the potential for scholarly achievement.
Appointment Date: August 2025

Salary: Faculty salaries are 90% of current College and University Professional Association (CUPA) averages by rank and discipline.

Responsibilities :
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to quality teaching, advising, and service to the field. Applicants will teach a 4/4 course load with courses in both the traditional classroom, as well as virtually. The ideal applicant will be able to provide instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The ideal candidate will also maintain an active service contribution to the department, university, local community, and discipline at large. The focus in teaching will be on global history, with a regular rotation of undergraduate and graduate historical methods, a research seminar, and general education courses. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate an active scholarly agenda.
