Position Summary
Senior counselors work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide clinical services, consultation, outreach and preventive programs that address the psychological and behavioral needs of the student population. Positions are full-time either 12-month or 11-month obligation.
Services include: diagnostic assessment; individual, couples, and group psychotherapy; case management; crisis intervention; referrals to outside providers, workshops, presentations, and other outreach activities.

Major Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions to college students
- Conduct initial assessments to determine students’ needs
- Determine and make appropriate referrals to psychiatric and other campus and community personnel
- Provide outreach and consultation on information regarding resources provided through Counseling and Wellness Services to the campus and larger community, including faculty, staff, families, students and other stakeholders
- Participate in annual orientation and training for students and staff which includes informing them on the available counseling and wellness services as well as referral procedures
- Provide crisis intervention as needed
- Supervise trainees to meet training requirements administratively and clinically
- Follow current ethical and legal guidelines to assure standards of practice
- Maintain professional license in field
- Document and maintain accurate progress notes
• The Senior Counselor will report to the director of Counseling and Wellness Services, and will work closely with staff from Health Promotion, Student Health Services, Disability Services, Career Services, and Residential Life and Housing.
• The Senior Counselor will supervise trainees
Required Qualifications
• A master’s degree in counseling or social work or doctoral degree in psychology
• Professional license to practice in New York State as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor ( LMHC ), Licensed Master Social Worker ( LMSW ), Licensed Clinical Social Worker ( LCSW ), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist ( LMFT ) or Licensed Psychologist (LP). Applicants with these licenses issued by another state will be considered and will be required to obtain NYS licensure within 6 months of appointment
• Minimum 3 years of clinical experience pre- or post-licensure providing mental health treatment
• Experience in crisis intervention and consultation
• Experience providing outreach or psycho-educational programming
Preferred Qualifications
• College counseling center experience
• Experience in providing clinical supervision
