Job Summary:
The Admissions Counselor will participate fully in all aspects of the college admissions process, including extensive travel, group and individual presentations, individual counseling with prospective students and their parents, and evaluation and selection of applicants. This personal will carry out daily operations of the Office of Admissions and territory management responsibilities.

Job Description:
Responsibilities:Territory Management:
  • Serves as the first point of contact for prospective families. Maintain strong ties with these families through entire admissions cycle. Uses connections with faculty and staff to help promote programs and opportunities available to Furman students.
  • Completes all market research and recruitment in assigned geographical areas. Personal correspondence with students in the region is required. Also coordinates any other activities necessary to the region (including receptions, phone-a-thons, and any other recruitment activities). Complete follow up with students within 24 hours of meeting.
  • Completes territorial responsibilities that will encompass the travel schedule and personal recruitment efforts for students within the territory. Maintains territory management reports.


Recruitment Travel:
  • Travels for eight to ten weeks in the fall and as necessary in the spring. Responsible for all planning and preparation for travel. Travel primarily involves visiting high schools, representing Furman at college fairs, hosting families at receptions and individual meetings with students.
  • Hosts virtual recruiting events such as virtual high school visits, college fairs, individual meetings with students and their families, etc when not able to physically connect with prospective students in-person.
  • Develops healthy working relationships with all members of the admissions team. He/she will do as much as possible to ensure a positive working environment. Be willing to aid with projects and tasks as necessary.


Application Review:
  • Reads and evaluates applications for admission. This process begins in late November and continues through mid-March.


Relationship Management:
  • Develops good relations with high school counselors and other external constituencies. Maintains open communication with guidance counselors during all stages of application review.


Public Relations:
  • Conducts group and individual information sessions with prospective students and their families on a daily basis. This work includes counseling candidates for admission. Be willing to assist with tours should additional guides be needed.
  • Monitors the Hartness Admissions Center as needed and welcomes guests to campus. This includes routinely covering the front desk, checking families in for campus tours and providing good customer service for all visitors.


Performs Other Duties as Assigned:

Responsibilities:
Daily contact with members of own work unit and immediate supervisor to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information, and make suggestions related to mutual goals. Frequent contact with members of other departments, the general public, prospective students, parents, counselors, and alumni to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.

Responsibility for Final Decisions:

Responsible for own work. May assist or instruct others doing similar work, including student workers. Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.

Reports To: Associate Director of Admissions

Work is performed independently except where the interpretation of law, policy, rule, complex procedure or request for exception is required.

Education/Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • The candidate must be able to multi-task, take initiative, and be a positive representative of Furman. Possesses strong organization skills, is dependable, flexible, and adaptable.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, and presentation skills required.
  • A valid U.S. Driver's License is Required.


Work Conditions:

Work is performed under typical office conditions, with the exception of when travel takes place. Work is then performed in varying environments each day to include visiting high schools, conference centers, arenas, restaurants for individual meetings with prospective families, etc. Evening and weekend work are required.
