Job Description
The School of Forestry is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to model ecosystem feedbacks between microclimate, disturbance, and forest health across Northern Arizona. The Postdoctoral Researcher will integrate a vast network of hydro-ecological data across multiple sites to ask key questions about forest ecosystem and hydrologic responses to changes in snow, soil moisture and fuel moisture across different disturbance and management scenarios. The successful applicant will work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers from to produce factsheets for managers and policymakers, conference presentations, and peer reviewed publications.
Field Research - 10%
- Assist with installation, maintenance, and downloading data from a network of environmental sensors that contribute to the dataset for modelling efforts.
- Assist with collecting live and dead fuel moisture sampling.
Modeling and Statistical Analyses - 40%
- Summarize and analyze environmental sensor and ecohydrologic datasets from a network of sites in northern Arizona.
- Apply ecohydrological/ecophysiological models to address questions on ecosystem responses to climate and disturbance in northern Arizona forests.
- Perform statistical analyses, including selecting the appropriate analysis procedure, setting up data for analysis, judging validity and reliability of data/model output, designing and writing programs to perform analyses, and producing written reports on the result of the analyses.
Research and Publications - 35%
- Publication of peer-reviewed journal articles related to project efforts.
- Presentation of project results to internal and external parties and at local, regional, and/or national conferences.
- Engage in writing of technical publications and reports.
Partnership and Collaboration - 10%
- Assist researchers and other collaborators, or may act independently, in planning and designing research experiments, establishing priorities and recommending schedules, timetables and costs.
- Work with classified staff, graduate assistants, or student employees.
Other - 5%
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in ecohydrology, ecophysiology, forestry, hydrology, ecology, civil-engineering, or related field that is conferred by start date.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with GIS and/or remote sensing data.
- Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative setting.
- Familiarity with at least one programming language and a demonstrated ability to apply quantitative models for hydrological and/or ecophysiological processes (e.g., ParFlow-TREES, RHESSys, or similar model).
- Demonstrated ability to communicate results of scientific work through peer-reviewed publications and/or conference presentations.

Background Information
Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. Salary
Salary range begins at $65,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
Benefits
Post-Doctoral Scholars are hired on a contract basis, renewable each fiscal year for a maximum of 4 renewals (5 years) according to terms of the Arizona Board of Regents' Conditions of Post-Doctoral Service. NAU offers an excellent benefit package to Post-Doctoral Scholars including generous health, dental and vision insurance; 10 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Participation in NAU retirement plans is not available to Post-Doctoral Scholars.
