Minimum Qualifications
- PhD / EdD by time of appointment
- Primary expertise in teaching Spanish for Heritage language learners
- Evidence of:
- effective teaching at university/college level
- ongoing research and scholarly activities
- Native/near-native fluency in Spanish and English
- Applied Linguistics, including Sociolinguistics, Spanish for the Professions, and/or Interpretation
- Ecocritical approaches to climate change and sustainability
- Indigenous Studies, Afro-Latinx Studies, and/or Chicanx Studies
- Primary research focus in Spanish for Heritage Learners preferred, but other areas may also be considered
- Involvement in university/departmental service related to curriculum; for example, experience with supporting student organizations, internship organization and placement, coordinating student volunteers, developing service-learning courses, recruitment and retention efforts, study abroad, etc.

Description of the Department or Unit
The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures is home to a diverse faculty, and offers a variety of courses in language, culture, literature, and linguistics. These courses support General Education as well as the department’s programs which include majors in East Asian Languages and Cultures, French and Francophone Studies, German, Spanish and Hispanic Studies, and initial licensure programs for K-12 French and Spanish teachers. The department also offers minors in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and TESL /Applied Linguistics, two years of instruction in Latin, and graduate programs in French and Spanish K-12 and College Teaching.
The department collaborates with the Honors College, the International Business program, the Reich College of Education, and the interdisciplinary Global Studies program within the College of Arts and Sciences. The department also works closely with Appalachian’s Office of International Education and Development offering short-term faculty-led programs abroad and a large number of semester- and year-long exchange programs.
The department and the College of Arts and Sciences are committed to supporting the ongoing professional development of all faculty, including at the rank of Lecturer.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses across the curriculum (at all levels) as needed
- Aid in the development of courses for Heritage Spanish learners in our curriculum
- Maintain an active research agenda
- Provide department and university service

Suggested Salary Range
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
