The Department of Urban Planning within the School of Architecture
and Urban Planning, housed in the College of Arts &
Architecture seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor to start in
August 2025. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is
Wisconsin's second-largest university, with a unique dual mission
of access and research to provide high-quality education for
students from all backgrounds. UWM is one of 146 top research
universities recognized as "R1" by the Carnegie Classification of
Institutions of Higher Education. The Department of Urban Planning
is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024-2025. The Master of
Urban Planning program is fully accredited by the Planning
Accreditation Board and is currently renewing this accreditation.
Currently, more than 40 students are enrolled in the Master of
Urban Planning program, and these students can also take advantage
of joint masters' degree opportunities with Architecture, Civil
Engineering (transportation), and Public
Administration. The department offers graduate certificates in Geographic Information Systems and Real Estate Development and an undergraduate Certificate in Urban Planning. The expectations of this assistant professor position include teaching, research, student advising, faculty committee service, and other duties and responsibilities normally expected of the faculty of the University. Qualified candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Urban Planning or a related field or be expected to complete their Ph.D. by July 2025. We are especially interested in candidates who are able to teach in the following areas, though individuals with other areas of teaching and research are encouraged to apply: economic and/or community development, housing, applied data science and technology, or applied methods in urban
planning. Candidates must also demonstrate a strong commitment to research and publication in peer- reviewed journals and other credible professional outlets, have strong research capabilities, be interested in engaging in research and projects grounded in the needs of urban planning professionals and the communities they serve, and be interested in research collaboration within the Department and
throughout UWM. Professional planning experience or demonstrated experience within applied practice and community collaboration is desirable. Familiarity with global issues in planning and an ability to integrate these issues into course teaching is also desirable.
