South Dakota State University ( SDSU ) Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences Department ( VBS ) is offering an exciting and unique career opportunity in a tenure track faculty position for a veterinary anatomic pathologist. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional with anatomic pathology expertise to develop and maintain an active research program, contribute to training the next generation of veterinary scientists and food animal veterinarians, and engage in diagnostic service within the Animal Disease Research & Diagnostic Laboratory ( ADRDL ).

The VBS Department is fully committed to the pillars of the land-grant mission and has a long history of national recognition for research in veterinary infectious disease, which is fully supported by newly renovated and well-equipped laboratory spaces. Additionally, the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine ( PPVM ) is part of the VBS Department and is a cooperative program with the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine to train veterinarians. The focus of the PPVM is to prepare future veterinarians to serve in roles that support animal health, environmental health, and public health. Lastly, the VBS Department is home to the South Dakota Animal Disease Research & Diagnostic Laboratory ( ADRDL ), which is an accredited, full-service veterinary diagnostic laboratory focused on supporting veterinarians, food animal agriculture, regulatory and wildlife agencies, public health entities and pet owners nationwide.

This is a 12-month, full time, benefit eligible, tenure-track faculty position. Documented qualifications and experience will determine appointment rank. This position is supervised by the VBS Department Head.

RESPONSIBILITIES :
Research & Scholarly Activities:
  • Develop and lead an active, extramurally-funded research program within the VBS Department with an emphasis on food animal infectious disease pathogenesis and prevention, and/or diagnostic test development;
  • Provide research opportunities to undergraduate, graduate and/or professional students as part of advanced undergraduate and graduate training.
Teaching Activities:
  • Coordinate the basic and systemic pathology courses in the 1st and 2nd-year PPVM curriculum;
  • Team-teach in the PPVM basic and systemic pathology courses in an experiential and active learning environment;
  • Utilize materials from the ADRDL for instruction in PPVM courses.
Diagnostic Service Activities:
  • Provide timely diagnostic pathology services, including necropsy, histopathology and interpretation of ancillary tests, as required for mammalian and avian specimens with emphasis on disease diagnosis;
  • Provide consultation, advice and guidance to veterinarians and producers regarding livestock, avian and wildlife disease diagnosis, control, and prevention.
The successful candidate will be expected to devote approximately 40-50% effort to research, 20-30% effort to teaching and 30-40% effort to diagnostic service. Adjustments in the position design and flexibility in the faculty appointment will be considered.

SALARY :
Commensurate with qualifications. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
  • DVM, VMD or equivalent veterinary degree by start date.
  • Advanced graduate degree (MS or PhD) in veterinary pathology or a closely related veterinary field.
  • Completion of formal residency training in anatomic pathology with experience in veterinary diagnostic pathology and food animal pathology.
  • Eligible for or certified by ACVP or ECVP .
  • Ability to establish an extramurally funded research program that focuses on diseases of food animals.
  • Ability to establish collaborations with external and internal stakeholders.
  • Potential to produce peer-reviewed publications related to expertise.
  • Ability to teach at the collegiate and/or professional school level.
  • Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Knowledge of food animal production in the United States.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
