Faculty Search: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor and Advanced Assistant or Early Associate Professor 


The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health, Department of Social Work invites applications for two tenure-track positions, an Assistant Professor and an Assistant or Associate Professor, to begin August 2025. Applicants who are ABD will be considered; however, degree requirements must be met by the effective date of appointment.

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, both on campus and online; 
  • Teach courses with a primary focus on research, advanced research/statistics with a focus on quantitative research, data science, and big data and/or social work practice; 
  • Conduct research and scholarly activity with relevance to Hawai‘i and/or the Asia and the Pacific regions, with a specific focus on housing, homelessness, poverty, and/or economic issues, and/or a focus on trauma (broadly defined); 
  • Seek extramural funding and publish in peer-reviewed journals; 
  • Serve as academic advisor to students, supervise independent study research activities, and participate on committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees; 
  • Render service to the profession and community relevant to academic/research specialty; 
  • Serve on department, school, and university committees; 
  • Participate in curriculum development and utilize technology innovations in program curricular activities;
  • Provider service and leadership to the university, discipline/profession, and community; 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications – Assistant Professor           

  • PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a college or university of recognized standing in social work or closely related field; 
  • Demonstrated ability as a teacher;  
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievements. 
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others. 

Minimum Qualifications - Associate Professor 

  • Doctorate from a college or university of recognized standing in social work or related field; 
  • Demonstrated ability as a teacher;  
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievements; 
  • Minimum of four (4) years at the rank of Assistant Professor or four years of other post-doctorate practice experience or one year in the rank of Associate Professor at another social work program of recognized standing; 
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed journals of relevant specialty; 
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others. 

 Desirable Qualifications  

  • MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited college or university; 
  • Two years post-MSW practice experience; 
  • History of teaching quantitative research and statistics-related and/or social work practice-related courses; 
  • Scholarly work focused on trauma (broadly defined) and/or housing, homelessness, poverty, or economic issues;
  • Research and/or practice experience with Native Hawaiian, other Pacific Islander, Asian, LGBTQ, immigrant, and/or other minoritized populations; 
  • Successful record in, or demonstrated potential for, securing extramural funding;  
  • Strong commitment to, knowledge of, and/or experience with the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa mission and purpose of positioning the university as a leading Indigenous-serving higher education institution and the department’s commitment to decolonizing social work practice; 
  • Demonstrated ability to use instructional technology in teaching.
