The Governance Studies program at Brookings is a leading, independent voice in the domestic policymaking sphere through analyzing policy issues, political institutions and processes, and contemporary governance challenges. The mission of the Brown Center on Education Policy, housed in the Governance Studies program at Brookings, is to produce quality, independent research that impacts the efficiency of schools and the lives of all students. Brown Center experts use the best tools available from the quantitative social sciences to bring data-based evidence to bear on education policy discussions in a timely manner. Thus, the Brown Center occupies a unique niche by bringing scientific sensibilities and methods to the issues of the day in education policy.

Please note: This position is based in Brookings' Washington, DC office. In response to COVID-19, Brookings staff are temporarily teleworking. The person hired for this position must be willing to move to or currently reside in Washington DC, Maryland, or Northern Virginia by their date of hire.

The Governance Studies Program at the Brookings Institution is accepting applications for a Fellow in its Brown Center on Education Policy. The Fellow should have a strong background in U.S. education policy. At Brookings, the Fellow will conduct research related to their individual scholarship as well as undertake collaborative projects within the Brown Center. The Fellow will be expected to produce a range of original work that includes journal articles, policy reports, and blog posts, while supporting the Brown Center’s efforts to improve research use in education more generally.

Education/Experience Requirements:

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in political science, public policy, education, economics, sociology, or a related discipline, or have equivalent experience. Ph.D. candidates will be considered as long as their degree is awarded prior to the start date. Candidates whose primary expertise is in early childhood, K-12, or higher education are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have a publication record that demonstrates strong empirical skills and an ability to produce policy-relevant research. The candidate will also show evidence of strong written and verbal communications skills.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

A candidate may blend academic excellence with practical experience. In addition, the individual must have the ability to undertake cutting-edge research and engage with broad and diverse audiences, including members of the media, policy community, and general public.

Salary will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and will be commensurate with experience. The start date is negotiable.
