Job Description:
BASIC FUNCTION:
Provide transportation for the University community during each academic semester.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- On call as needed, weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays, as scheduled.
- The position may also require irregular hours of work.
- Report for assigned shift as scheduled by the Security and Transportation Administrator (STA).
- Inspect the vehicle prior to start of shift, ensuring that all equipment, i.e. radio, lights, turn signals, emergency flashers and windshield wipers, function properly, and report any discrepancies to the STA.
- Notify the STA immediately if a vehicle is found to be unsafe to operate, i.e. lights out, windshield wipers inoperative, door will not secure properly, etc. or any damage.
- Assume responsibility for the cleanliness of the vehicle.
- Ensure that the University policies and procedures are enforced, i.e. no food or drink in vehicle and no smoking, and report those individuals who refuse to adhere to these policies.
- Report all incidents to the STA or security supervisor on duty immediately.
- Ensure that the van is not overloaded, and everyone has a seatbelt.
- Report any accidents immediately (before leaving the scene) to the STA and a police officer, if outside the city of Newport.
- Observe all state and local laws and ordinances pertaining to the operation of a motor vehicle on public and private roadways.
- Complete required documentation at the end of each trip.
Valid Rhode Island Class I Chauffeur's license or out-of-state equivalent required.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position is subject to both inside and outside work and extreme cold and hot temperatures may be encountered.
Requirements:
High school diploma or GED is required. The incumbent must be at least 18 years of age and shall not have been convicted of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Must have a good driving record, with no moving violations within the past six months. Must have good verbal communication skills for FM radio transmissions. Must exhibit maturity and a professional manner. Must be familiar with Rhode Island Motor Vehicle Code. Must pass a University-administered driving and written test with a minimum score of 80%.
This position also requires the incumbent to travel throughout the University on a regular basis and may, on occasion, require bending, reaching, ascending and descending steps and stairs, stooping, crouching, crawling, kneeling, walking, pushing, standing, lifting, feeling, seeing, talking and hearing.
