General Summary
Eastern Michigan University's (EMU) School of Social Work is now
accepting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor
position. This position is part of a university-wide
interdisciplinary cluster hire focusing on college students' mental
health and well-being. This
position will work in collaboration with faculty from, but not
limited to, Higher Education Student Affairs, College Counseling,
Public Health, Sociology, Nursing, Psychology, and Occupational
Therapy, as well as practitioners in the field to form the College
Student Mental
Health Research Collaborative. The collaborative will develop a
research agenda that can inform practice and institutional policy
formation related to mental health and well-being. This position
starts August 2025.
The School of Social Work's grassroots mission of
empowerment-oriented practice guides the curriculum of our
CSWE-accredited BSW and MSW programs. We stand behind our School's

Founded in 1849 as a small teacher's college, EMU is a major
learning and research institution with a distinct mix of
comprehensive academic resources and strong community initiatives.
We offer more than 200 undergraduate majors, minors and
certificates, plus more than 150 graduate programs to more than
16,000 students. The School of Social Work is located within the
College of Health and Human Services with over 350 undergraduate
(BSW) and 170 graduate (MSW) students.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Teach contractual load of undergraduate and graduate courses as
assigned by the department or school.
Assign and submit grades in accordance with established University
schedules.
Keep posted office hours during the week which are scheduled at
times most beneficial to students.
Provide academic advising to students, if applicable.
Serve on search committees for hiring of new faculty members,
departmental committees and other service committees across the
university.
Participate in activities such as student registration,
orientation, convocations and commencements.
Attend and participate in scheduled departmental meetings and
functions.
Provide other support service to the department, college and/or
university, if applicable.
Engage in pursuits that enable them to remain current in their
respective disciplines.
Engage in pursuits that help to further organize and contribute to
growth of the body of knowledge in their respective disciplines,
and/or to explore interdisciplinary implications.
Perform related Departmental duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
This is a full-time, eight-month academic appointment. The
successful applicant will have an MSW from a CSWE-accredited
program and earned a DSW or PhD in social work or a closely related
field conferred before the beginning of employment Candidates must
also have the equivalent of at least 5 years of full-time, post-MSW
degree social work experience. Successful candidates will teach
courses in our BSW and MSW programs. The BSW program focuses on
generalist practice while the MSW program offers advanced training
in interpersonal practice. The social work program provides
flexible programming and a curriculum focused on developing
practice competencies. MSW classes are scheduled evenings and
Saturdays to accommodate student schedules while undergraduate
courses have both day and evening scheduling.
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates should have an established research agenda and interest in college student's mental health and well-being. Preference will be given to candidates who have practice experience and scholarly expertise relevant to the needs of culturally diverse populations and demonstrate a commitment to social justice. Candidates will have responsibilities for teaching, scholarship and service within the SSW, the College, the University, and the larger community. As described above, participation in the cluster collaborative will be required.
