User Experience and Outreach Librarian

Buffalo State, State University of New York, seeks candidates for the position of User Experience and Outreach Librarian

SUNY Buffalo State College seeks two (2) creative, service-oriented individuals to work collaboratively with colleagues to establish and promote our recently renovated Butler Library Academic Commons as an essential and supportive learning environment for a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and community members. These positions will help us explore innovations in our approaches to helping students and faculty at our redesigned Ask Us desk. The incumbents will develop strong working relationships with patrons to understand their service and space needs and improve their experiences using the library.

The positions are full-time, 12-month, tenure-track positions represented by United University Professionals (UUP).

Duties and responsibilities include:
• Primary focus is on creating a welcoming and helpful frontline service environment at our new Ask Us desk. Help ensure that inquiries (from basic directional questions to more complex research consultations) are answered effectively or referred to the appropriate support service. Contribute to daily operations at the desk, including mentoring student workers.
• Organize library outreach efforts, including events, exhibits, tours, and other in-person and online engagement activities.
• Develop content for library web pages, update social media channels, and design online and print materials to assist with information sharing, wayfinding, and promotional activities.
• Participate in virtual and face-to-face information literacy activities, including library instruction and workshops.
• Ensure that library spaces are navigable, accessible, and meet various patron needs for working individually, connecting with peers, and meeting with librarians, tutors, or other student support teams.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree conferred before position start date from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
    • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly and professionally (evaluated in part by your application materials).
    • Evidence of understanding the value of working collaboratively in an inclusive environment and interacting effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of current academic library trends, especially in the areas of user experience, instruction, or outreach.
    • Ability to articulate a vision for the library’s role in supporting student success in a rapidly changing academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Evidence of the types of research, writing, creative, or presentation skills needed to be a successful tenure-track librarian.
• Experience working in an academic library setting.
• Experience training and supervising student workers.
• Familiarity with instructional technologies and support for in-person, blended, and remote/online learning.
• Knowledge of current commonly-used library applications (LibGuides, Ex Libris Alma, Primo, etc.) and research resources (EBSCO, Proquest, JSTOR, etc.).
• Awareness of accessibility guidelines and how they relate to library services, spaces, and online resources. Edge NXT.
