Academic Support Specialist

North Carolina Central University

Primary Purpose of Position:
The person hired for this position will serve as a specialist in the School of Law's Academic Support Program.

Minimum Education/Experience:
  • A juris doctor degree from an ABA accredited institution.
  • A member in good standing with a state bar.
  • An outstanding law school academic record.
  • A genuine desire to work closely with students.
  • Three years of experience as a practicing attorney or one year of experience in student support at a law school.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience working in academic or bar support positions with law students.
  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience in higher education, preferably law.
  • Experience working with students or others in crisis with a calm and respectful demeanor, and subsequently make well-reasoned determinations of next steps.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent computer and technology skills. Experience with data management, Microsoft Excel, and report development preferred.
  • Ability to effectively teach in workshop and individual settings.
  • Flexibility to work evening hours and weekends.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to find creative solutions for complex problems while still maintaining the integrity of the standards and policies of the institution.
  • Ability to work independently, making effective decisions quickly and resolutely.
  • Ability to work with a highly diverse staff, faculty, and student body
