Job Description
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for IT Technician 3, University Police Services [R0127813]
ROLE of the POSITION
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Information Technology and Emergency Communications, the position provides a broad range of IT assistance to University Police Services personnel regarding technical needs and equipment usage. The IT Technician 3 will install software, resolve general technology needs, assist with use, error resolution, network connections, password reset, and service request coordination, referral, and escalation. Serve as initial point of contact for general IT service requests. Document all requests and related communication in the appropriate service management tool. A few other responsibilities include: deploy technology equipment, move, deliver, and setup hardware to user requirements. Update inventory to reflect location and possession of property. Test implementation of new systems, and conduct and update inventory of department technology.
DEPARTMENT PROFILE
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) was established in 1865 and is currently comprised of two doctoral-granting universities, a state college, four comprehensive community colleges and one environmental research institute. The public system of higher education in Nevada is governed by the Board of Regents serving over 100,000 students and 15,000 employees.
University Police Services, Southern Command, is a full service category I law enforcement agency that serves the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the College of Southern Nevada, the Desert Research Institute and Nevada State College. The department consists of 163 employees and has responsibility for the public safety needs of 80,000 students, faculty and staff over an 800 square mile service area. Law enforcement operations consists of 80 full and part time sworn peace officers, a full service 9-1-1 Center, K-9 operations; emergency management operations with a fully functional EOC and oversight of major special events hosting more than a million visitors a year to various events.
We operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and are the providers and/or coordinators for all emergency services on campus. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or equivalent and four years of experience utilizing the fundamentals of typical computer systems, operating systems, applications, and peripherals, two years of which must have included IT work experience in a user support role; OR one year of relevant experience as an IT Technician II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Help Desk Support:
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (required at time of application):Detailed knowledge of: computer hardware, software, peripherals, and current computer technology and trends; help desk applications as used for change/problem management. Working knowledge of: commercially available operating systems and applications used by the agency; principles and practices of a computer system and peripheral devices as needed to operate and monitor a system; user password security principles and practices. General knowledge of: database principles; network domains and login procedures; web browser capabilities and the difference between intranets and the Internet. Ability to: analyze problems, develop alternatives, and recommend appropriate solutions; assist users with problems and disseminate system information; create and maintain specific records/documentation pertinent to the agency's computer system and programs; troubleshoot and analyze problems to determine if the problem can be corrected by the operator or if a higher level IT staff member must be called; use utilities to check for network connectivity; and all knowledge, skills, and abilities required at the lower levels in the same IT Technician specialization.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (typically acquired on the job):Working knowledge of: departmental policies and procedures related to help desk support; hardware and software specific to an agency; agency change/problem management escalation plan. Ability to: train and lead assigned personnel if applicable to the position.
Mainframe and Server Operations:
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (required at time of application):Detailed knowledge of: computer hardware, software, peripherals, and current computer technology and trends. Working knowledge of: data processing procedures as needed to fix the job control language or system language and post-process job output; job control language or system language; job recovery procedures; principles and practices of a computer system and peripheral devices as needed to operate and monitor a system; specific computer commands relative to an agency's computer system; user password security principles and practices; data processing systems. General knowledge of: database principles. Ability to: analyze problems, develop alternatives, and recommend appropriate solutions; assist users with problems and disseminate system information; coordinate/maintain run schedules as required in ensuring all user deadlines are met; create and maintain specific records/documentation pertinent to the agency's computer system and programs; perform required maintenance on printers; prioritize jobs/workload based on time commitments and hardware resources; provide quality control of jobs in order to ensure jobs are run correctly; troubleshoot and analyze problems to determine if the problem can be corrected by the operator or if a higher level IT staff member must be called; understand and interpret user job schedules (i.e., instructions on sequence and how to run schedules); and all knowledge, skills, and abilities required at the lower levels in the same IT Technician specialization.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (typically acquired on the job):Working knowledge of: departmental policies and procedures related to mainframe or server operations; hardware and software specific to an agency; job control languages or scripting used by the agency. Ability to: train and lead assigned personnel if applicable to the position.
This recruitment is limited to current classified employees who have served at least six months of continuous full-time equivalent service in a probationary, special disabled, emergency, provisional or permanent status, or any combination of these, in the classified service AND who is currently working in the area specified in this job advertisement.

SALARY
Grade 30 Step 1, salary $41,989.68. "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
