Reporting to the Vice Provost, Finance and Administration, the Associate Vice Provost (AVP) for Human Resources will serve as the senior human resources leader for the Provost's Management Center responsible for over 6,000 employees across Duke schools, University Institutes, and Centers (UICs), and academic support units. The AVP will lead the development and implementation of an approach to HR support, oversight, and professional development that embraces Duke's commitment to its talented people and their careers. This key leader will collaborate with Duke central human resources and HR leaders for other management centers and across schools and UICs to develop user-friendly processes and policies that balance the needs of our people with sound business practices and regulatory requirements. The AVP will demonstrate a commitment to a workforce dedicated to exceptional performance and excellence, and ensuring others feel as though they belong at Duke.

In this role, the Associate Vice Provost of Human Resources will:
  • Lead and develop the Provost's Management Center HR team to support the HR needs within the schools, UICs, and academic support units they service.

  • Represent the Provost's Office and schools, UICs, and academic support units in the development of processes and policies, ensuring the sometimes-unique needs of academic and research organizations, including their deans and leaders, are being served well.
  • Oversee the review, approval, and processing of HR and payroll-related transactions that flow through the Provost Management Center. Establish policy for HR actions and transactions that require management center approval, in coordination with the Vice Provost, Finance and Administration.
  • Develop and implement best practices and policies to administer salaries of employees across schools, UICs, and academic support units.
  • Oversee the annual staff performance evaluation and faculty and staff merit salary increase process.
  • Provide highly centralized and confidential support and advice for the hiring and appointment of senior leaders such as deans, vice provost, center, and institute directors.
Successful candidates are required to have a bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or a related field from an accredited institution, and at least 10 years of progressive experience in a related field. Additionally, a master's degree and PHR/SPHR/GPHR certification are preferred.
