Program Overview
The GEAR UP Program offers academic, career, and financial counseling to encourage participants to pursue postsecondary education. This position is grant-funded and will end on September 30, 2025. Continued employment is contingent upon ongoing grant funding. The program grant supports the Class of 2024 graduates from Millwood, Western Heights, Del City, and Midwest City High Schools.
Position Overview
The GEAR UP College Transition Coordinator will assist the director in implementing the 7th Year objectives of the GEAR UP Connect grant, ensuring all related activities are executed effectively and successfully. The GEAR UP Transition Coordinator will provide essential support to recent GEAR UP Connect high school graduates as they transition into college or the workforce. This role is critical in ensuring students receive academic guidance, effectively use campus resources, complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), and maintain retention through their first year of college. This role involves tracking students who have either enrolled in postsecondary institutions, entered the workforce, or are still undecided about their future. The position will provide services to support them in pursuing postsecondary credentials.
Additionally, the coordinator will be responsible for capturing and documenting data required for compliance with federal grant program requirements. Accurate and timely data collection is vital for monitoring program effectiveness, reporting on student progress, and ensuring adherence to federal guidelines. The coordinator will collaborate closely with program staff to track and record student outcomes, compile reports, and ensure all data complies with federal standards. This documentation is crucial for demonstrating the program's success and impact.
Job Duties
- Academic Coaching and Support:
- Provide academic coaching to cohort students.
- Assist students in choosing and declaring an academic major.
- Support students with course selection for their second year of postsecondary education.
- Address academic, social, and personal needs of students.
- Financial and Academic Planning:
- Assist students with financial planning and the importance of financial aid.
- Advise students on transferring to other schools and exploring short-term certificate programs at career technology centers.
- Data Management:
- Capture and report all student and parent participation for entry into the SCRIBE online data tracking system.
- Additional Duties:
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Experience Required
Bachelor’s degree in job related field or 4+ years of work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and be able to operate a typical motor vehicle.
Qualifications/Experience Preferred
- Previous participation or employment in GEAR UP or TRiO programs.
- Experience as a first-generation college student.
- Associate degree or higher, or completion of at least two years in a college or university program.
- Demonstrated knowledge of college resources, financial aid processes, and academic support services.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of current educational resources related to testing, career planning, college admissions, and financial aid.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Empathetic and supportive attitude towards recent high school graduates transitioning to college.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Reliable transportation required for travel to area post-secondary institutions and workforce agencies.
- Ability to serve as a mentor to GEAR UP Connect students.
- Proven ability to work effectively with the target population, officials at post-secondary institutions, community agencies, organizations, and centers.
- Skill in cooperating and communicating with colleagues, participants, parents, and community members involved with the program.
- Ability to work independently while adhering to program guidelines and coordinating various program components.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to serving the target population and upholding the principles of equal educational opportunity.
This position does not involve supervising other employees.
