Class Summary
The primary responsibility of the DDS / DMD in clinic is to supervise all care and treatment plans developed and carried out by dental hygiene students and overseen by clinic faculty as outlined by the Texas State Dental Practice Act. Didactic and laboratory teaching may be assigned as needed.

Minimum Education/Training/Experience
·DDS or DMD degree from a CODA accredited institution.
Preferred Education/Training/Experience
· Experience teaching in, or supervising a clinic at a CODA accredited dental hygiene program.
· Formal education in teaching methodologies or clinical education and grading.
Minimum Knowledge & Skills
· Working knowledge of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners Dental Hygiene and Dental laws and regulation.
· Medical emergency response protocol.
· OSHA and Texas State standards in infection control.
· ALARA principles for radiograph prescription.
Preferred Knowledge & Skills
· Working knowledge of Commission on Dental Accreditation ( CODA ) standards for dental hygiene programs.
Job Duties
· Meet CODA and TSBDE set standards and assist in the clinical program accreditation process.
· Follow all clinical policies and procedures and work with the program administrator to make changes as needed.
· Provide consultation on patient’s medical history and direct the need for medical consultations.
· Perform screening of orofacial structures and tissues, recognize deviations from normal and provide referrals for evaluation.
· Maintain, document and review thorough, accurate and confidential patient charts.
· Prescribe subgingival medicaments, oral care products and antimicrobials as indicated.
· Authorize radiographs, interpret radiographs, and evaluate treatment needs.
· Diagnose dental hygiene treatment needs and oversee treatment provision within the clinic.
· Discuss clinical presentation and referral needs with students and patients in a thorough and detailed manner.
· Authorize sealant placement and adjust sealants as needed.
· Observe and grade students’ clinical skills following course objectives. Provide feedback to students verbally and on grading form.
· Administer local anesthesia, authorize and supervise students and faculty administering local anesthesia.
· Consult students or staff on recommended course of action post percutaneous exposures.
· Participate in orientations, meetings, and calibration activities as a department.
· Meet with program administrator and faculty to promote continuous evaluation and improvement in program procedures, policies, and clinical operations.
· Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned.
Licensing/Certification Requirements
Active license from TSBDE or ability to obtain license prior to appointment.
Physical Requirements
· This job requires working in a clinical and laboratory setting. Occasional lifting, bending, standing and dexterity are expected. The job may require sedentary work, including sitting for long periods of time. Communication in English, both verbally and in written form are required daily.
