The University of Virginia Department of Anthropology is growing a thriving undergraduate program in Medical Anthropology, Ethics, and Care and is working to enhance its graduate programs along these lines. We are seeking to hire a sociocultural medical anthropologist at the rank of Full Professor (tenure track).

Candidates should have a record of extended ethnographic research and theory building based on skillful ethnographic description and analysis. While geographic and topical specializations are open, teaching and research strengths should complement those of current department faculty. Key areas of potential collaboration with current faculty include, though aren’t limited to: ethics of care; experiences of suffering and illness; health and the environment; health, race, and equity; biopolitics; Indigeneity, survivance, and community flourishing; mental health and addiction; death and dying; gender and reproductive health; and interfaces of technology, health, and medicine.

Candidates must contribute to theoretical conversations and arguments through peer-reviewed articles, scholarly monographs, and invited talks and lectures. Successful candidates will have a record of procuring substantial external grants, teaching excellence, graduate student mentoring, and innovative institutional leadership. Responsibilities include teaching Introduction to Medical Anthropology, expanding our medical anthropology offerings for undergraduates, and taking a leading role in building graduate programs in medical anthropology in and beyond the department.

We are particularly interested in candidates with proven dedication to community-based collaborative research, public-facing scholarship, and interdisciplinary collaborations. We are keen to strengthen our connections across and beyond the College of Arts and Sciences, including participation in programs such as the interdisciplinary Health, Ethics, and Society Program; Global Studies; Environmental Humanities; and Environmental Thought and Practice. We want to hire someone committed to working collaboratively, mentoring colleagues, engaging with a diverse academic community, and contributing to a vibrant departmental community.
