Summary
The Center for Space Medicine is seeking a Manager, Communications to support the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) and its national commercial spaceflight health research program, EXPAND (website below), working in coordination with the Office of Communications and Community Outreach. This role manages daily operations for internal and external communications to further recruitment for and visibility of a complex, international commercial spaceflight health research program. Reporting to the Director of Research Operations, this role manages all communications and recruitment for EXPAND. The ideal candidate has experience driving complex and highly technical outreach strategies. Familiarity with space biomedical research and scientific communications is strongly preferred. This position enjoys a hybrid work model and is highly productive when working virtually and in-person at the office.
This position is eligible to work hybrid (1 day in the office) within the Greater Houston, TX area. The schedule is flexible between 7 am - 6 pm, Monday - Friday.

Job Duties
- Manages communications activities of the EXPAND program, aimed to engage commercial spaceflight companies and future passengers in critical space health research, in coordination with BCM Office of Communications and Community Outreach and CSM/TRISH leadership.
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of EXPAND communications. This includes assigning and editing stories; press release development; liaising with commercial spaceflight companies and passengers; overseeing development of supporting materials; communication of complex scientific topics to the lay audience.
- Develops/manages communications relationships with all commercial spaceflight providers enrolled in the EXPAND program, NASA Public Affairs, and companies providing hardware for microgravity research.
- Manages and deploys comprehensive communication strategy that encompasses scholarly journals, opinion pieces, and media outreach to effectively share TRISH's expertise in space health and commercial space research, and research findings.
- Leads EXPAND internship opportunities which support the development of future scientific leaders, science communicators and program officers. Trainees will learn to lead a diverse research program and communicate effectively to advance space biomedical research.
- Develops/manages an EXPAND website to represent research and recruit spaceflight companies, in coordination with NASA and BCM Communications and Information Technology.
- Develops content, materials and scope for EXPAND in print and digital formats.
- Trains staff and other stakeholders to effectively communicate EXPAND program’s mission, goals and research in public presentations and media.
- Works closely with TRISH IT lead to learn new technologies and platforms relevant to EXPAND.
- Closely manages communications for commercial space mission launches carrying out EXPAND research. Liaises with science and research operations teams to track progress on such special projects.
- Travel, as needed, to support local engagement during EXPAND launch/landings.
- Manages and approves EXPAND content developed by Communications staff, consultant support, and seasonal interns.
- Generates and edits content describing EXPAND efforts to engage civilian space travelers in health research. Identifies commercial space industry partners for outreach initiatives.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Four years of relevant experience.
- Proven track record of managing large-scale communication projects.
- Strong leadership and team development skills.
- Familiarity with multi-media campaign development and execution.
- Experience in communications within the healthcare or spaceflight industry.
