This is a full-time position beginning July 1, 2025. Please visit this web page ( https://www.hollins.edu/about-hollins/jobs/ ) to learn more about Hollins; its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice; faculty development; the university’s students; and the Roanoke Valley.
Position and Qualifications
The Studio Art program at Hollins educates and empowers students in the creative process through a breadth of experience in multiple media areas and a depth of experience in the media of their choice. Art Department faculty are dedicated to teaching, creative work, and experiential learning that further the university’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
We aim to hire an artist-educator with a broad technical background in printmaking and a strong understanding of the role of print media within contemporary art and culture. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in inclusive and equity-minded teaching and be committed to working in an undergraduate, student-centered, liberal arts educational environment. A preference will be given to artists whose creative work engages with race, class, gender, accessibility, social justice, and/or environmental activism.
An MFA in studio art (i.e., printmaking, drawing, visual studies, or a related field) or a terminal degree in a relevant field of study is required. Applicants with college level (or equivalent) teaching experience of drawing and printmaking are preferred. Additionally, candidates should have a robust artistic practice that demonstrates a commitment to the broad use and interpretation of contemporary printmaking and related disciplines. They are expected to maintain an active professional practice including exhibitions, publications, and speaking engagements, and they must also have experience running/maintaining a printshop. The department boasts a dedicated non-toxic printmaking studio, and the artist in this position would be responsible for maintaining the equipment and materials.
This position carries a teaching load equivalent of six courses per year, teaching all levels of printmaking and drawing including Drawing I, rotating through the studio art senior seminars, and contributing to Hollins’ general education curriculum. Concepts of equitable, inclusive, and accessible artmaking are built into all Art Department courses, and the successful candidate will continue to enhance and develop this DEI focus in the curriculum through course design and new course proposals. Additional duties include service to the department and university such as student mentorship and advising, supervision of undergraduate internships, and faculty governance.
The successful candidate for this position will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in Art History and in the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum, all of which are housed in the Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center. They will also help shape the future of the Studio Art program which offers a B.A. major and minor.
