Williams College is excited to announce an opening for a Power Plant Operator within our Facilities Team. Under the direction of the Lead Power Plant Operator and the Engineer in charge, the Power Plant Operator operates and maintains steam boilers, fuel handling equipment, boiler feed water equipment, air compressors, air dryers and related equipment, and all other related working and emergency equipment within the Williams College Combined Heat and Power Facility (CHP).
Responsibilities:
- Operates and maintains steam boilers under the direction of the
Shift Lead and the Chief Engineer.
- Operates and maintains boiler burner equipment, fuel handling
equipment, and boiler feed water equipment. The Plant Operator will
acknowledge and take corrective action in response to all system
alarms under the direction of the Shift Lead.
- Operates and maintains air compressors, air dryers and related
equipment in order to maintain uninterrupted service of instrument
air and plant air, taking necessary readings, data and logging the
same.
- Maintains process equipment and coordinates maintenance and
repairs under the direction of the Shift Leads or Plant
Manager.
- Ensures proper "Lock-out/Tag-out" procedures are followed per
plant policy procedures under the direction of the Shift Lead or
Plant Manager.
- Performs minor maintenance repairs to equipment under direction
of Shift Lead or Plant Manager to ensure continued
operations.
- Operates and maintains under the direction of the Shift Lead
the emergency electric power generator. Under direction of the
Shift Lead/Plant Manager, operator will transfer plant power and
respective boilers to emergency power operation in the event of
power failure and transfer back to normal operation when power is
restored. Operator will take necessary readings on emergency power
generator for maintenance purposes and log fuel level and other
prescribed data, then turn the data over to the Shift
Lead.
- Performs daily water tests on all water treatment required for
the supply and treatment of boiler feed water and condensate;
changes chemical treatment accordingly, and adds correct chemical
dosage, and logs chemical inventory.
- Observes and records pressure, temperatures, makeup water,
condensate return, and fuel consumption.
- Performs all lubrication, flushes, drains and changes oil in
all equipment operated on a routine basis, or as directed by the
Shift Leads/Plant Manager.
- Performs pump transfers as directed by the Shift
Leads.
- Remains on duty until properly relieved and gives a complete
and through turnover to relieving shift.
- Performs general manual work, such as cleaning stations,
opening and closing valves and opening and closing
manways.
- Performs all duties in a safe manner, utilizing safety
practices and procedures required by Williams College under the
applicable general laws for Massachusetts. Must wear personal
protective equipment, and perform annual training for reporting
procedures. Reviews all pertinent safety material before conducting
new assignments.
- Monitors for, and reports unusual occurrences to Shift Leads
and the Plant Manager.
- Maintains all equipment in a clean, orderly, and operating
condition.
- Must hold, or be able to obtain, a Massachusetts Hoisting
License for classifications 1C and 3A
Qualifications:
- Possess a current Massachusetts 2nd Class Fireman's License or
higher.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Ability to use hand and power tools, multimeters, and
specialized tools as required.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate verbally.
- Must hold a current Massachusetts Hoisting License
classifications 1C and 3A.
- Must hold a valid driver license.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and work on your feet for 12 hour
periods.
- Ability to navigate throughout the heating plant and multiple
levels using stairs and ladder climbing.
- Demonstrated/demonstrable experience working with computers,
instrumentation equipment, and control systems.
- Ability and willingness to learn the control systems, data
logging, and other systems as required.
Application review will continue until the position is filled. Pay range starts at $34 per hour, commensurate with experience.
