Position: Assistant Professor of Public Relations
Effective Date: August 18, 2025 (Fall Semester)
Salary: The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $71,100 - $151,128/per year. The anticipated hiring range is $86,000 to $90,000/per year. Salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • M.A. in public relations, mass communication or relevant discipline
  • Professional experience in public relations or strategic communication
  • Demonstrated potential or excellence in teaching at the college level
  • Record of or demonstrated potential for successful scholarly research and publication
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including Black/African American, Latine/x, Native American/Indigenous, low-income, first-generation, and minoritized students

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in public relations, mass communication or relevant discipline. Degree at the time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2025.
  • Significant professional experience in public relations or strategic communication
  • Achievement in scholarly research and publication
  • Active or leadership role in affinity and advocacy organizations
  • Experience of successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
  • Experience mentoring or supporting students with minoritized identities or experience using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse classroom

Duties:
  • Teach a variety of undergraduate public relations courses [Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof]
  • Develop curriculum and advance the public relations program
  • Engage in original scholarly research that leads to peer-reviewed presentations and publications
  • Contribute to shared governance by serving on committees and participating in other activities
  • Advise the CSULB chapter of PRSSA and/or the CSULB Bateman Team
  • Participate in service to the department, college, university, and community

About the Department
The Department of Journalism & Public Relations has close to 600 students studying in one of our four academic programs: Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations, Minor in Journalism and Minor in Public Relations. We take great pride in having one of the most diverse student bodies in higher education as well as accreditation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications for both of our majors. Our 35 full- and part-time faculty members are passionate about teaching, and our up-to-date curriculum prepares students for a variety of careers in communications. We have numerous labs and an internship program, and we are home to several Bateman national public relations case study competition titles, award-winning student media (Beach TV News, DIG Magazine, ENYE Magazine, and The Daily 49er) and active campus chapters of the Asian American Journalists Association, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and Public Relations Student Society of America.

The CSULB campus is located in the second largest media market in the United States and it is in the heart of Southern California, 25 miles south of Hollywood, 15 miles west of Disneyland, and minutes from the Pacific Ocean. With more than 35,000 students, CSULB is one of the largest and most desirable campuses in the 23-campus California State University system.
